Evaluation of Teaching and Teaching Reflection
NC State provides a range of methods for the evaluation of teaching. In addition, faculty are required to have periodic peer reviews of their teaching. However, these teaching evaluation methods are often summative and the results often cannot be used until the course is taught again. Because of this, you may want to consider using a Midsemester evaluation in your courses.
CLASSEVAL
Classeval is NC State’s formal, required, end-of-course evaluation system, allowing students the opportunity to provide feedback about their course experiences. The Evaluation of Teaching Committee assures that practices required by the Evaluation of Teaching Regulation (05.20.10) are appropriate and accurately reflect the needs of faculty and students. The Office for Faculty Excellence, in conjunction with the Evaluation of Teaching Committee, has developed a document with easy tips for improving response rates on your end-of-semester evaluations.

Peer Review of Teaching
NC State requires that the instruction of all full time faculty be reviewed by a colleague or peer. The frequency and details associated with peer review care governed by Regulation 05.20.10. The Office for Faculty Excellence in association with the Evaluation of Teaching Committee has developed a Peer Review of Teaching template that can be used to help peer reviewers as they review teaching materials. Information and suggestions are also available for departments and colleges who may want to review or improve their current processes.
Midsemester Evaluations
Midsemester evaluations offer instructors the ability to discover how they might improve their course prior to its conclusion. This improvement-focused type of evaluation is managed and controlled by the instructor, with results seen only by the instructor. Midsemester evaluations can be distributed in person, on paper or be distributed electronically by software such as Google forms or Qualtrics.
