A new program developed to assist faculty in their relationship with graduate students.

Mentoring Matters

Mentoring Matters is a 4-part professional development program designed in collaboration with NC State’s Graduate School to equip faculty with the tools and strategies to foster more productive and successful mentoring and advising relationships with graduate students. Based on the CIMER Entering Mentoring curriculum, the series focuses on how to nurture advisee/mentee relationships through exploring case studies and proven tools and strategies. Participants will come away from the series with better insight and understanding of the mentor/mentee relationship and a suite of tools to use with their mentees. This program consists of four 90-minute workshops every week in February 2025. The workshop topics are:

  • February 7, 2025 – Session 1: Your Advising Philosophy and Expectations facilitated by Dr. Carlos Goller
  • February 14, 2025 Session 2: Addressing Mentee/Advisee Development and Performance facilitated by Dr. Katharine Stewart
  • February 21, 2025 – Session 3: Fostering Ethical Behavior, Independence and Goal Achievement facilitated by Dr. Maria Gallardo-Williams
  • February 28, 2025 – Session 4: Communicating Effectively and Positively with your Mentee facilitated by Dr. Rhonda Sutton

All sessions will be delivered hybrid (in person and online)

Attendees are encouraged to sign up for all 4 sessions and participate in the face to face format.

The face-to-face sessions will have a maximum attendance of 12 people and lunch will be provided. 

All sessions occur on Fridays in February from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m.

  • Sign-up phase 1:  
    • FACE-TO-FACE Participation. Sign up for the entire 4-part series as an in-person participant and receive lunch for all sessions plus a certificate and digital badge. (up to 12 people)
    • ONLINE Participation: Sign up for the entire 4-part series as an online participant and receive a certificate and digital badge (up to 12 people)
  • Sign up phase 2: 
    • Sign up for remaining online and face-to-face to face individual sessions. (if available)
