Faculty LEAD

Are you a faculty member who:

  • Is interested in moving into a leadership role?
  • Has recently accepted a leadership role?
  • Is an experienced faculty leader wanting to hone your skills?

The Faculty LEAD (Leadership Education and Development) program may be right for you. This certificate is offered at no cost, but participation is capped at 30 faculty members. To apply for one of the 30 spots, fill out the application form by 12:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 22. Acceptance notifications will be sent by Sept. 26.

The Faculty LEAD Program, sponsored by NC State’s Learning and Organizational Development, Office for Faculty Excellence and Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity is intended for faculty members who want to become better leaders. This year-long, cohort-based program will be held primarily in-person. Faculty participants will attend six core sessions, participate in the Faculty LEAD Reads discussion group, and attend at least two one-hour facilitated Leadership Conversations, leading to a Faculty LEAD certificate.   • Friday, October 13:  Leading With Emotional Intelligence, 9 a.m. to noon, Western Blvd. Business Service (Room 130), 1220 Varsity Drive
    • Facilitated by Dr. Kevin Rice, this session will begin with an overview of the program, icebreaker activity and program guidelines. Participants will then discuss Leading With Emotional Intelligence. This session will  provide an overview of the concepts of Emotional Intelligence (EI) and Emotional Quotient (EQ). By harnessing the power of Emotional Intelligence, leaders can apply these attributes to motivate and engage their teams, strengthen cooperation and increase performance.
  • Friday, October 27: Inclusive Leadership in Academia, 9 a.m. to noon, Western Blvd. Business Service (Room 130), 1220 Varsity Drive
    • Facilitated by Dr. Melvin (Jai) Jackson, this session will equip academic leaders with the knowledge, skills, and strategies needed to foster inclusive and equitable environments within educational institutions. This workshop delves into the vital role of leaders in shaping the culture, policies, and practices of academia to ensure that all community members feel valued, respected, and empowered to thrive.
  • Friday, November 10: Communication Styles, 9 a.m. to noon, Western Blvd. Business Service (Room 130), 1220 Varsity Drive
    • Facilitated by Anne White. Gain useful insights of social styles and communication patterns to engage others to achieve results and improve team dynamics. Build self-awareness of behavior and an understanding of the importance of improving workplace relationships to increase productivity.
  • Friday, January 19: Creating Team Engagement, 9 a.m. to noon, Western Blvd. Business Service (Room 130), 1220 Varsity Drive
    • Facilitated by Stephanie Davis. Discuss strategies to drive higher levels of engagement by creating positive and productive working environments for team members to thrive
  • Friday, February 23: Managing Difficult Conversations, 9 a.m. to noon, Western Blvd. Business Service (Room 130), 1220 Varsity Drive
    • Facilitated by Dr. Kevin Rice. Learn how to prepare for a difficult situation, lead the conversation with an effective step-by-step guide while applying this new skill to faculty-centric scenarios.
  • Friday, March 22: Faculty LEAD Reads, 9 a.m. to noon, online via Zoom
    • Facilitated by Alexa DeFalco. Join a facilitated conversation around the selected Faculty LEAD Reads book. The book (on a leadership topic) will be chosen in October, and all participants will read it in preparation for this session.
  • Friday, April 5: Leadership Dialogue and Celebration Lunch, 9 a.m. to noon, Western Blvd. Business Service (Room 130), 1220 Varsity Drive
    • Facilitated by Dr. Kevin Rice. The program concludes with two university leaders sharing lessons learned throughout their leadership journey. Gain valuable insights for how to take your leadership to the next level. A celebration lunch will follow.

The Leadership Conversations will be announced soon. At least eight conversations will be offered, and participants must attend two of their choice. There will be Zoom and in-person options for the conversations.
