Fulbright Informational Session with Fulbright Program Specialist

When: May 14, 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. EST

Interested in teaching or conducting research abroad? Consider a Fulbright Fellowship. Fulbright funds over 2,000 awards annually in more than 140 countries. As a Fulbright Scholar you can expand your network, foster lasting relationships, serve as an ambassador for international exchange, and gain valuable experience working and teaching abroad. Fulbright is family-friendly and flexible; Fellowships range anywhere from two weeks, in the case of Fulbright Specialists, to a year for Fulbright scholars.

Join us on May 14th from 1:00 – 2:30 pm for our Spring Fulbright Informational Session. Fulbright Outreach and Recruitment Specialist, Michelle Bolourchi, will provide an overview of current Fulbright programming, answer your questions, and offer suggestions for applicants. This event will be recorded for those unable to attend.

Fulbright Fridays: One-on-One Advising

When: Every Friday from May 1 – Septemper 4, 2020
Fulbright Fridays is an opportunity for faculty and staff to get one-on-one advice on Fulbright programming and support for developing your application materials. Fulbright Fridays is aimed at applicants at all stages of the process, whether you are just contemplating applying or are working on materials.

What is Fulbright? The Fulbright program funds over 2,000 awards annually in more than 140 countries. What is Fulbright Friday? Every Friday from May 1st- Sept 4th the Director of External Faculty Awards and Recognition, Dr. Maria Almanza, will be available for individual meetings. Appointments are available for up to an hour and are dictated by the needs of applicants. To reach more faculty, available time slots will alternate each week between 9-12 and 12-3. Interested faculty and staff can sign up by searching the google calendar available here or at https://go.ncsu.edu/fulbrightfriday.

How do I sign up? 1) Click on an available calendar slot. Appointment slots are available each Friday beginning May 1st. 2) At the bottom of the “Book Appointment” screen, click save. This will automatically generate an invite and place a hold on the time slot. 3) I will email you shortly after to gather more information about your needs and to share a zoom invite to our meeting.

Encourage Virtual Student Engagement in Online Classes using Study Buddies

NC State University recently launched GPS Mobile, the companion app to the web-based advising platform, Student Success GPS. GPS Mobile is a student-centered app that provides personalized and timely information, access to campus resources, appointment scheduling for academic advising and other campus offices, and many other tools.

One exciting feature within the app is Study Buddies, a tool that enables students to connect with others’ in their class sections who are interested in creating study groups outside of class. As you prepare for your online summer classes, you may wish to share this information with your students and encourage them to download the GPS Mobile app and use Study Buddies to connect with their peers virtually. Mindful Mondays

In these times of uncertainty, fear and anxiety are on the rise. We are all adjusting in ways few could have anticipated. The practice of mindfulness – the capacity to be fully present in the moment – is a way to cultivate a calm, focused mind and to offset the negative effects of stress and avoid burnout.

Taking care of our own well-being through practices of self-inquiry and self-reflection benefits ourselves and those around us. Mindfulness offers a way to care for one another and our students through kindness, empathy and compassion.

Start your week with the intention to practice mindfulness during this period of social/physical distancing and isolation. Join us every Monday to practice movement, breathe, meditate and simply be in community with fellow NC State faculty and staff.

Sessions are held in Zoom every Monday for 30 minutes at 9:00 a.m. and repeated at 12:00 p.m.. Each session includes a few stretches, some breathing, and a 15 minute guided meditation followed by time for sharing and questions, as well as tips for incorporating mindfulness into daily life.

This program is suitable for all levels and open to NC State faculty and staff. No special equipment or training is needed.

Sessions are led by OFD Program Evaluation Specialist Dr. Jennifer Stanigar. Dr. Stanigar is a Kripalu certified yoga teacher who has been practicing and teaching yoga and meditation classes for over 20 years.

|RED| Applications Open: Core Teaching Certification and Inclusive Teaching Certification (Due May 22)

Applications are open through May 22 for the summer cohorts of both the Inclusive Teaching Certification and the Core Teaching Certification.

Inclusive Teaching Certification

This comprehensive, asynchronous Certification is a collaborative professional development project among NC State University’s Disability Services, DELTA, experienced faculty, GLBT Center, Graduate School, Office of Faculty Development, Office of Global Engagement, Office of Institutional Equity & Diversity (OIED), and Office of Information Technology.

Accepted participants will:

Consider multiple facets of inclusive teaching, encompassing the creation of a welcoming, equitable course climate, the design and implementation of accessible and inclusive classroom practices and assessments, and the selection and implementation of inclusive, diverse course content;
Engage with key concepts in inclusive teaching and learn from various stakeholders on our campus and other institutions of higher education who share their important research on student development, Universal Design for Learning, intercultural competence, and intrapersonal awareness; and
Develop the resources for applying inclusive course pedagogical practices that support all learners.

Core Teaching Certification

The CTC:

Provides faculty the opportunity to learn pedagogical skills and information about teaching not necessarily gained during formal training in graduate school, helping them become more scholarly teachers;
Recognizes faculty for their efforts in becoming more intentional, reflective teachers who incorporate effective practices in teaching in higher education; and
Affords faculty members the opportunity to meet other faculty members outside their home departments who are dedicated to improving their teaching.
