Facilitating Engaging Class Discussions

Faculty participants will:

  • Develop thought-provoking questions that foster engaging class discussions
  • Discover strategies for setting/communicating expectations for participation
  • Discuss techniques for balancing student participation during discussions

Offered two ways:

Teaching through Metacognitive Reflection

Faculty participants will:

  • Explore techniques that engage students in:
    • Making connections to prior learning;
    • Clarifying/Documenting their learning;
    • Actively recalling their learning; and
    • Identifying areas of growth/deficiencies.
  • Design prompts/questions to promote metacognitive reflection

Offered multiple ways:

New OFD Programming: Grading Retreats

Does the thought of end-of-the semester grading make you cringe? A quiet space, group support, and refreshments may help with that. The Office of Faculty Development has partnered with NC State University Libraries to offer Grading Retreats at the end of fall and spring semesters for all NC State faculty: Monday, December 16, 2019 and Monday, May 4, 2020. Retreats will be held in the Faculty Research Commons in James B. Hunt Jr. Library (Centennial Campus).

Join your peers and motivate each other to get the job done! OFD staff will be on hand for any consultation desired to help make the job less onerous. Coffee/tea/water and a light breakfast will be provided. Registration is for the full-day event (8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.), but please feel free to come and go as needed — join us all day, in the morning, in the afternoon, or even just for an hour or two! Space will be limited for each retreat, so please sign up early!

Open Textbook Forum with Nicole Finkbeiner

Are you interested in using Open Educational Resources in your syallabi? Join the NCSU Libraries for a discussion led by Nicole Finkbeiner, a national leader in Open Education. Finkbeiner is the Director of Institutional Relations for Rice University’s free textbook initiative, OpenStax, where she founded and runs the nationally-recognized Institutional Partner Program. She is a national keynote speaker on open education, equity, and access.

Nicole also coaches colleges and universities to effectively encourage faculty adoptions of Open Educational Resources (OER) to promote student success and faculty academic freedom. This event will take place on Wednesday, November 13th at 11AM in the Multimedia Seminar Center of the D. H. Hill Jr. Library. NIH @ NC State Grantsmanship Series: Budgeting for NIH Grants

The NIH @ NC State Grantsmanship Series is for anyone in the NC State Community who would like to learn more about grant opportunities at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The Proposal Development Unit, in the Research Development Office of the NC State Office of Research and Innovation, is sponsoring this series to help promote NC State research efforts in health and biomedical sciences.

The Budgeting for NIH Grants seminar will cover why NIH budgets may differ from other federal agencies, how to be strategic about budgeting, and how to set-up a modular budget.

Molly Puente serves as NIH Grants Coordinator for the Proposal Development Unit; prior to joining the PDU, Molly worked for over a decade at NIH.

Libraries Workshop: Build, Share, & Amplify Your Scholarly Profile Online

  • Thursday, November 21, 1:00 – 2:30 p.m.
  • ITTC Lab 2 at the D. H. Hill Jr. Library

It is increasingly necessary for researchers to have a professional presence online. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to establish and manage your scholarly identity to help you connect with colleagues, find collaborators, and share your research with new audiences. You’ll also learn how to boost your scholarly impact using new methods of knowledge communication and online dissemination.
