Faculty Opportunities for International Engagement

In recognition of International Education Week, the Office for Faculty Excellence wishes to draw attention to the various ways faculty can get involved in international engagement on campus and in the classroom.

Global graduates! A graduation cap rests atop a world globe, signifying international studies and worldwide success

NC State is proud of the international impact of faculty and supports those interested in expanding those efforts. Whether starting a study abroad program, pursuing a visiting fellowship, or internationalizing the classroom, there are resources to support you.

Once faculty have had experience in one of these initiatives, consider building upon it by seeking other opportunities, leveraging connections and insights. For example, if you have been involved in setting up a study abroad program, you might be a good candidate for a Fulbright Scholarship. In addition, if you have incorporated COIL in the classroom, perhaps you can consider extending that engagement by applying to a visiting fellowship program.

Find resources below related to Study Abroad, Fulbright, COIL, and international grants and fellowships.

Develop a Program

  • In order to maintain a healthy portfolio of programs that meet the changing and unique needs of each academic unit, the Study Abroad Office welcomes strategic program proposals that meet student needs, as well as both Study Abroad and University strategic goals.
  • Study Abroad programs are developed in collaboration with the Study Abroad Office at least 18 months prior to the start of the program
  • Do you have a specific program idea you would like to run for NC State students? Develop a program.

Here’s the amazing Study Abroad team within the Office of Global Engagement and the colleges each advisor supports:

Ashton Croft: College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, College of Sciences and College of Natural Resources

Lindsay Hughes: College of Engineering

Mansir Petrie: Wilson College of Textiles

Geneva Walata: College of Design, College of Education and College of Humanities and Social Sciences

We welcome your collaboration in supporting students interested in studying abroad and in identifying partner university courses that can be pre-approved to meet NC State academic requirements.

Fulbright

The Fulbright U.S. Scholar program offers teaching and research awards to U.S. citizens in more than 130 countries. College and university faculty and administrators, as well as professionals, artists, journalists, scientists, lawyers and many others, can join the more than 400,000 Fulbrighters who have come away with enhanced skills, new connections and greater mutual understanding.

Collaborative Online Learning (COIL)

Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) promotes virtual, interactive educational opportunities by connecting faculty and students through shared experiences across international borders.

In the COIL model, faculty from NC State and colleagues at institutions abroad collaborate on parts of their courses to incorporate educational activities that promote global learning and cultural competency. Examples of collaboration can range from shared components from course syllabi, cross-cultural dialogues and group projects, all the way to deep, full-semester partnerships.

The goal is to create opportunities for professors and students to have meaningful international and intercultural learning experiences from their home campuses. A secondary goal is to motivate interest and foster self-confidence to participate in future study, travel, or work abroad.

Incorporating curricular online global learning into a course involves collaborating with a faculty member abroad. Need contacts? The NC State European Center in Prague and the NC Japan Center can assist in making connections in the Czech Republic and Japan. The Office of Global Engagement can share contacts with university collaborators around the world. You can also search the COIL Connect for Virtual Exchange website. This website is dedicated to connecting higher education faculty around the world who are interested in COIL.

Want to meet others on campus who are interested in COIL? Join the COIL Faculty and Staff Learning community. Here you can learn more about ways in which you can provide international experiences to your students within your courses, share resources about how to internationalize your curriculum, and help foster cross-discipline collaboration. Sign up here.

Contact the Office for Faculty Excellence at faculty-excellence@ncsu.edu with questions about setting up a COIL project or request a consultation with an OFE staff member here.
