HyFlex Tips and Tricks
What is HyFlex? In a nutshell, it is a teaching modality that recognizes that students might need to engage with the class materials in different modes at different times. If you teach in person but in some way share your lectures online via streaming or delayed posting you are in essence teaching a HyFlex course.
While all courses are different, HyFlex can be particularly challenging in large classes. Today on Faculty Forum, check out some tips and tricks that apply to the simultaneous delivery of content as we prepare for the Spring semester.
Reading Circle Sign-Ups Close on Friday!
Registration is open now through Jan. 14 for OFE’s Spring 2022 Reading Circles.
For Spring 2022, we are offering two selections:
- Advancing Online Teaching: Creating Equity-Based Digital Learning Environments by Kevin Kelly and Todd D. Zakrajsek (Stylus, 2020, 264 pages) – Available as a paper book (provided at no cost by OFE)
- Ungrading: Why Rating Students Undermines Learning (and What to Do Instead) (West Virginia University Press, 2020, 288 pages) Edited by Susan D. Blum, with a foreword by Alfie Kohn – Available as an ebook (provided by NC State University Libraries) or paper book (provided at no cost by OFE)
Our Spring 2022 Reading Circles will be fully online and synchronous, with meetings held in Zoom. All meeting dates and times have been preset by OFE based on what timeslots have been most popular in the past; you just need to sign up for the schedule that best suits you.
Teaching and Learning Symposium: Poster Deadline Extended
The Office for Faculty Excellence is pleased to host their 2022 Teaching and Learning Symposium on Friday, February 25, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., virtually via Zoom. This year’s theme will be Creating Our New Normal. The Symposium will include a keynote lecture, concurrent sessions, and a poster session.
The proposal deadline for Digital Posters has been extended to this Friday, Jan. 14.
Teaching and learning-related posters that have been presented in other venues within the past year can be considered (please note where and when the poster has previously been presented). New for 2022: faculty, postdoctoral scholars and professional staff from all six member institutions of the Cooperating Raleigh Colleges are eligible to submit proposals! Please see the full Call for Proposals for more information.
Our keynote speaker will be Dr. Susan D Blum. Dr. Blum is a professor of anthropology at the University of Notre Dame, currently fixated on education and pedagogical praxis, after a previous incarnation as a China anthropologist. She is the author of “I Love Learning; I Hate School”: An Anthropology of College (Cornell, 2016) and My Word! Plagiarism and College Culture (Cornell, 2009), and the editor of the recent volume Ungrading: Why Rating Students Undermines Learning (and What to Do Instead) (West Virginia University Press, 2020). With 5 co-authors, she has written “A Theory of Public Higher Education,” published in Soundings: An Interdisciplinary Journal in July 2021.
We invite faculty, postdoctoral scholars, and staff from all member institutions of the Cooperating Raleigh Colleges (NC State, Meredith College, Saint Augustine’s University, Shaw University, Wake Tech Community College, William Peace University) to attend. Registration is required by filling out the registration form.
Data and Visualization Workshops
The NC State University Libraries’ Data and Visualization workshops are now open for registration! Topics range from Introduction to Programming with Python, Beginning Tableau, Get started with ArcGIS Arcade, and more. Workshops will be held on Wednesdays and Fridays at Hill Library and virtually.
Topics Include:
- GeoCollab Series (includes topics such as ArcGIS Arcade, Compile and map data, Investigate pollution patterns with space-time analysis, and many more!): starting January 19 at 1 pm
- Beginning Tableau: Wednesday, January 26 at 10 am
- Introduction to Programming with Python 3-week series: starting January 28 at 10 am
- Python Open Labs: February 25 at 10 am and March 4 at 10 am
- MATLAB Virtual Hands-on workshops: February 17, March 24, and April 14 at 1 pm

NC State Global Launches 2021-22 Global Engagement Institute
NC State Global has announced their Global Engagement Institute (GEI). The GEI is an annual program offered by the Office of Global Engagement (NC State Global) to provide professional development for faculty interested in developing international collaborations. This year’s GEI cohort is coordinated by NC State Global staff, David Dixon, Director of Global Partnerships and Dr. Heidi Hobbs, Director of Faculty Engagement. For 2021-2022, the GEI cohort consists of nine faculty members, representing six colleges. Each participant was competitively chosen by their respective colleges for participation, subject to final selection by a review committee in the Office of Global Engagement.
