Turn educational innovation into tangible scholarship

The Office of Faculty Development invites you to apply for the 2021 Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Institute (SoTL), a program designed with busy faculty members in mind who would like to explore teaching as a form of scholarly work. The SoTL Institute provides NC State faculty with skills, funding, mentorship, and support to conduct research in teaching and learning. Participants will learn about SoTL and discipline-based education research (DBER), as well as design and implement a research project to study teaching and learning in their course or courses.

The SoTL 2021 theme is Crafting Educational Innovation in Difficult Times. Let’s reflect on the hard lessons learned during this difficult year and turn them into innovative scholarship that can be published and shared.

Eligibility: Any full-time faculty member at NC State may apply to participate in this program.

Purpose: The purpose of the SoTL Institute is to support the development of a SoTL or DBER project. In the year-long experience, faculty will develop research questions for educational research, design a study using quantitative and qualitative assessment techniques, and gather evidence that can be used to answer these questions. In this program, participants will receive guidance from experienced SoTL researchers to:

  1. Develop an educational research agenda
  2. Lower barriers to presentation/publication
  3. Receive mentorship, funding, and support
  4. Belong to an educational research community

Program Dates: This is a 1-year commitment that begins with an intensive Virtual Institute held in mid-May. For this year, the dates are Monday, May 10, Wednesday, May 12 and Friday, May 14, 2021.There are 4 follow-up meetings in August 2021, October 2021, January 2022, and April 2022, all held on the last Monday of the month from 3:00-4:00 PM. Participants will present a poster with their findings at the 2022 Teaching and Learning Symposium held at the end of February 2022.

Funding: Each participant is eligible for a mini-grant for up to $1,250 that can be used for conference travel or other allowed project-related expenses.

Applications open Monday, March 1, 2021 and close at 11:59pm on Friday, April 9, 2021. Proposals to study topics related to the theme Crafting Educational Innovation in Difficult Times will be given priority in the selection process. If accepted, you must commit to attending all program sessions. Acceptance notifications will go out on Monday, April 19, 2021.

Labor-Based Grading Contracts as Antiracist Classroom Writing Assessment

  • April 2, 2021, 3:00-4:00 p.m.
  • Dr. Asao Inoue (Professor and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Equity, and Inclusion, College of Integrative Sciences and Arts, Arizona State University)
  • Sponsored by the Campus Writing and Speaking Program

How do we make our grading practices in all disciplines not just more equitable and inclusive but antiracist in purpose and outcomes? This interactive keynote centers on labor-based grading contracts in all courses where students write. It will discuss what they are, what values and philosophical grounds they promote, and how a teacher might begin thinking about using them in college courses.

During the keynote, participants will engage in three activities: (1) an interactive lecture that offers some theoretical background that leads to using labor-based grading contracts in classrooms that support writing; (2) a reflective reading of a template labor-based grading contract; and (3) a Q&A period. Participants will leave the lecture with a sample labor-based grading contract and a handout with links to other materials online.

Back to Basics: Classroom Assessment Techniques

Many faculty members have never had any formal training in education. For this reason, OFD is offering some simple introductory offerings to get faculty on track with their teaching.

The next session in this series will be held tomorrow (Tuesday, March 2).
Classroom Assessment Techniques (Tuesday, March 2, 2021, 2:00-3:00 p.m.), Led by Dr. Diane Chapman, Executive Director, Office of Faculty Development: Just as students benefit from frequent feedback, instructors benefit from frequently checking in with students about their learning. Classroom assessment techniques are quick, effective ways for taking a pulse of the classroom. In this workshop, we will share some simple classroom assessment techniques to increase learner success.

Our other remaining session will be held April 6:

Metacognition to Improve Student Outcomes (Tuesday, April 6, 2021, 2:00-3:00 p.m.), Led by Dr. Melissa Ramirez, Assistant Teaching Professor, Department of Biological Sciences: How do we make sure that students learn in our courses? We start by giving them ownership of their learning process. In this workshop we will share some simple ways to engage students in metacognition, showing students how they learn, and how to maximize their efforts to master the course content.

Writing Wednesdays: Virtual Faculty Writing Retreats (This Week)

Do you have a writing task that you’ve been putting off? The Office of Faculty Development offers virtual writing retreats, Writing Wednesdays, designed to support you in getting it done!

Until we return to in-person meetings on campus, the OFD team has designed synchronous 2.5-hour mini-retreats using the Pomodoro method. Our upcoming sessions are scheduled via Zoom on March 3 and April 7.

During these sessions, faculty participants will:

  • Work toward a specific writing task in a structured and supportive environment;
  • Be able to access resources from campus experts such as the Libraries, and the IRB office; and
  • Discover tips for preparing for the retreat and getting your writing done.

Special bonus for Writing Wednesdays: we have pre-recorded child edutainment provided by Arts NC State for your Wolfpack pups ages 3 to 12 years.

Register today and plan to dedicate uninterrupted time to writing your article, grant proposal, book chapter, or dossier materials.
