In our academic environment, we are constantly working to enhance the learning experience for our students. Beyond our disciplinary expertise, we share a commitment to effective pedagogy and continuous improvement. This is where the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) comes into play.
What is SoTL?
SoTL is a systematic inquiry into student learning that allows faculty to explore, evaluate, and refine their teaching practices. It’s more than simply trying new techniques; it involves:
- Systematic Investigation: Employing rigorous research methods to examine teaching and learning.
- Public Sharing: Disseminating findings through publications, presentations, and other scholarly outlets.
- Focus on Student Learning: Centering the inquiry on understanding and improving student outcomes.
By engaging in SoTL, you can:
- Gain deeper insights into the effectiveness of your teaching strategies.
- Contribute to the broader academic community through scholarly work.
- Enhance student learning and engagement in your courses.
- Develop a reflective and evidence-based approach to teaching.
At NC State, we recognize the importance of supporting faculty in their pursuit of SoTL. We believe that by fostering a culture of inquiry and reflection, we can collectively elevate the quality of education across our campus.
To help you embark on or advance your SoTL journey, we are pleased to announce our 2025 SoTL Institute. This program is designed to provide you with the essential tools and knowledge to conduct meaningful SoTL research.
