Faculty LEAD
Are you a faculty member who:
- Is interested in moving into a leadership role?
- Has recently accepted a leadership role?
- Is an experienced faculty leader wanting to hone your skills?
The Faculty LEAD (Leadership Education and Development) program may be right for you. This certificate is offered at no cost, but participation is capped at 30 faculty members.
The application deadline has been extended. To apply for one of the remaining spots, fill out the application form by 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26. Acceptance notifications will be sent on Sept. 27.
The Faculty LEAD Program, sponsored by NC State’s Learning and Organizational Development and Office for Faculty Excellence is intended for faculty members who want to become better leaders. This year-long, cohort-based program will be held primarily in-person. Faculty participants will attend six core sessions, leading to a Faculty LEAD certificate. This year’s core sessions are:

- Friday, October 4: Faculty LEAD Orientation and Leadership Strategies for Fostering a Collaborative Academic Environment, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., Western Blvd. Business Service (Room 130), 1220 Varsity Drive
- Facilitated by Stephanie Davis, Learning and Organizational Development, and Dr. Melvin (Jai) Jackson, Office for Faculty Excellence. This session will begin with an overview of the program expectations and opportunities to connect with peers. We will then provide the tools and strategies needed to cultivate a collaborative and supportive environment within educational institutions, focusing on the critical role of leaders in shaping the culture, policies, and practices of academia to ensure that all community members are empowered to contribute and succeed.
- Friday, November 8: Leading With Emotional Intelligence, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., Western Blvd. Business Service (Room 130), 1220 Varsity Drive
- Facilitated by Dr. Kevin Rice, Learning and Organizational Development. Leading With Emotional Intelligence provides an in-depth exploration of Emotional Intelligence (EI) and Emotional Quotient (EQ). Utilizing the Emotional Quotient Inventory-2, leaders gain self-awareness of their effectiveness in interactions with others.
- Friday, January 10: Collaborating Across Generations, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., Western Blvd. Business Service (Room 130), 1220 Varsity Drive
- Facilitated by Alexa DeFalco, Learning and Organizational Development. Today, universities are home to five distinct generations, each contributing a unique set of work values, communication styles, and perspectives. In this session, we will explore how to understand and leverage the strengths of all generations to foster a more collaborative and productive university environment for everyone.
- Friday, February 14: Keys to Communicating Effectively, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., Western Blvd. Business Service (Room 130), 1220 Varsity Drive
- Facilitated by Dr. Rebecca Dunning, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. DISC is a personal self-assessment tool widely used by organizations to help members gain self-awareness and improve interpersonal communications. In this interactive workshop participants learn how to identify the communication “styles” of others and strategies to manage their own styles to become better communicators.
- Friday, March 7: Managing Difficult Conversations, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., Western Blvd. Business Service (Room 130), 1220 Varsity Drive
- Facilitated by Dr. Kevin Rice, Learning and Organizational Development. Learn how to prepare for a difficult situation, lead the conversation with an effective step-by-step guide while applying this new skill to faculty-centric scenarios.
- Friday, April 11: Leadership Dialogue and Celebration Lunch, 9:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., Western Blvd. Business Service (Room 130), 1220 Varsity Drive
- The program concludes with a panel of university leaders sharing lessons learned throughout their leadership journey. Gain valuable insights for how to take your leadership to the next level. Q&A to follow.
