|RED| Applications Open: Core Teaching Certification and Inclusive Teaching Certification (Due December 15)

Core Teaching Certification

Applications for the Spring 2021 online cohort for the Core Teaching Certification |CTC| are now being accepted.

The CTC:

  • provides faculty the opportunity to learn pedagogical skills and information about teaching not necessarily gained during formal training in graduate school, helping them become more scholarly teachers;
  • recognizes faculty for their efforts in becoming more intentional, reflective teachers who incorporate effective practices in teaching in higher education; and
  • affords faculty members the opportunity to meet other faculty members outside their home departments who are dedicated to improving their teaching.

Faculty who successfully complete the Certification intentionally refine and enhance their courses with feedback throughout the reflective course design process.

Faculty participants complete one (1) learning module and reflective activities in five core competencies:

CTC Competencies

There are a variety of modules from which to choose, offered both face-to-face and online.

Inclusive Teaching Certification

Faculty, postdocs, and teaching graduate students are invited to apply for the Spring 2020 online cohort of the Inclusive Teaching Certification |ITC|. This comprehensive, asynchronous Certification is a collaborative professional development project among NC State University’s Disability Services, DELTA, experienced faculty, GLBT Center, Graduate School, Office of Faculty Development, Office of Global Engagement, Office of Institutional Equity & Diversity (OIED), and Office of Information Technology.

Accepted participants will:

  • Consider multiple facets of inclusive teaching, encompassing the creation of a welcoming, equitable course climate, the design and implementation of accessible and inclusive classroom practices and assessments, and the selection and implementation of inclusive, diverse course content;
  • Engage with key concepts in inclusive teaching and learn from various stakeholders on our campus and other institutions of higher education who share their important research on student development, Universal Design for Learning, intercultural competence, and intrapersonal awareness; and
  • Develop the resources for applying inclusive course pedagogical practices that support all learners.

Participants complete foundational activities, one elected learning module, and learning reflections in each of five core competencies:

Inclusive Pedagogy, Awareness and Perspectives, Cultural Relevance and Responsiveness, Community and Belonging, Access and Empowerment

Call for Participants: Campus Writing and Speaking Program Spring 2021 Faculty Seminar

Teaching with Writing
Do you long for time and support to improve your writing assignments? Are you curious about how to help students to write more effectively in your discipline? Do you wish that evaluating writing could be less time consuming and more effective? Do you worry about students’ writing abilities but aren’t sure how to help? Do you need advice about using writing in your course in a (newly) online medium?

The Campus Writing and Speaking Program seeks nominations and applications for a spring semester faculty seminar focused on incorporating writing into NC State courses in all disciplines. Each faculty participant will receive a stipend of $500 at the conclusion of the seminar.

This spring, the seminar will meet in hybrid format. Every two weeks (for six sessions), participants will meet in one-hour synchronous Zoom sessions to exchange ideas. On the alternate weeks, they will watch brief presentations totaling less than one hour.

Times and days for synchronous meetings will be determined after participants have applied. The times and days that can accommodate the most applicants will be chosen. The 6 scheduled Zoom meetings will occur after Jan. 19 and end before April 30.

Recorded presentations will offer new perspectives and strategies for incorporating writing into courses, with a focus on designing effective informal and formal assignments, supporting students through the writing process, and responding to and evaluating writing. Synchronous meetings will allow for ideas to be exchanged in open discussion.

Participants agree to watch the prepared presentations and read some brief scenarios; meet synchronously via Zoom for 6 one-hour sessions at times TBA; and, after the semester ends, prepare a brief report of the changes they have made to their course(s) as a result of the seminar.

The seminar is limited to 12 participants. Full-time faculty in all positions are invited. If you are unable to participate, please send this announcement to interested faculty or, using the link to the form below, suggest we write directly to a colleague.

  • Applicants must be available to attend six one-hour Zoom meetings. Please note that missing two or more meetings will forfeit the stipend, but you may continue to attend.
  • The course(s) to be improved should be offered at least once every two years. Participants do not have to be teaching the course while enrolled in the seminar. Graduate courses are also eligible.
