OFD Newsletter: December 3, 2018

Good morning, and welcome to the final week of Fall classes!

Today’s edition of the OFD newsletter features information about our Spring Reading Circles, as well as an announcement from our friends in DELTA. Please read on for details.

1. Sign-up for OFD’s Spring 2019 Reading Circles!

Registration is now open for the Office of Faculty Development’s Spring 2019 Reading Circles. OFD now provides circles to better meet your schedule and preferences. We offer both face-to-face (in-person) and virtual (online, asynchronous) meetings to discuss the books. Book titles differ based on the type of reading circle meeting.

This spring, choose between two texts for Face-to-Face Reading Circles:

  • Agile Faculty: Practical Strategies for Managing Research, Service, and Teaching by Rebecca Pope-Ruark (University of Chicago Press, 2018, 176 pages)
  • Zig Zag: The Surprising Path to Greater Creativity by Keith Sawyer (Jossey-Bass, 2013, 288 pages)

Our Virtual Reading Circle (VRC) texts are:

  • Creating Wicked Students: Designing Courses for a Complex World by Paul Hanstedt (Stylus, 2018, 200 pages)
  • Small Teaching: Everyday Lessons from the Science of Learning by James M. Lang (Jossey-Bass, 2016, 272 pages)

Please register by Thursday, December 13, 12:00 p.m. using the form at the link below.

2. Upcoming DELTA Workshops

Registration is available for the following two workshops offered by DELTA:
Mission Possible: Apps and Other Technology to Engage Learners

  • Presenter: James McConnell
  • When: December 11th, 10:00 – 11:30 am
  • Where: Center for Technology and Innovation

Interested in getting your students to give feedback during class? Wanting them to discuss with each other more? Utilizing these three free tools (Padlet, Quizlet & Synth), Faculty Fellow James McConnell will share examples from his classes on the impossible – getting students to interact with the content and one another productively in class!

Flip Forward into the Pool of Student Engagement

  • Presenter: Justin Post
  • When: December 12th, 1:30 – 3:00 pm
  • Where: Avent Ferry Technology Center

Are you looking to use a flipped approach to enhance engagement in your face-to-face or blended course?  The flipped learning model is an instructional strategy where the more passive learning activities happen outside of the classroom, allowing more time for interactive activities during class time.

Join Faculty Fellow Justin Post as he shares tips and strategies from his own course experiences.
