Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Faculty Fellow – 2022-2023
Office for Faculty Excellence (OFE)
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Office for Faculty Excellence (OFE) was established in 2021 as a merged unit with what were formerly the Offices of Faculty Development and Faculty Affairs. The OFE provides faculty with information about professional development opportunities and resources to support their teaching, scholarship and research, and service and engagement. OFE offers a range of programs addressing teaching and learning and other areas of faculty work, alone or in conjunction with other NC State offices
Essential Job Duties
The SoTL Faculty Fellow will participate in the planning, operation, and assessment of a comprehensive Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Institute for faculty at NC State in conjunction with the Executive Director and other Office for Faculty Excellence (OFE) staff. This faculty fellow position comes with $5000 for the academic year 2022-2023. Faculty with either 9 or 12 month appointments are eligible. There is potential for additional compensation for summer effort. This position will be for one year with the possibility for renewal through a second year. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Assist OFE staff with the facilitation of the SoTL Institute in May 2023.
- Consult with faculty interested in SoTL research to connect with available campus resources (library, writing, copyright, IRB, etc.)
- Work with SoTL Institute participants who are completing SoTL projects.
- Assist OFE staff with the preparation for the next offering of the Institute.
Minimum Education/Experience
- Terminal degree in a relevant field required
- Experience teaching in higher education
- Current faculty member at NC State
- Expertise in higher education pedagogy and instructional design
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to collaborate effectively with a variety of constituencies
- Ability to work independently within a structure of collaboration and teamwork
- Proficiency with Google G Suite, Microsoft Office, and Moodle
- Familiarity with tools for information access, collaboration, and instruction using current technologies
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Graduate of the OFE’s SoTL Institute
Experience as a SoTL Researcher
Experience leading or training others in research projects

Essential Job Duties
The Faculty Learning Communities (FLC) Faculty Fellow will participate in the planning, implementation, operation, and assessment of a comprehensive program to create Faculty Learning Communities for NC State faculty, in conjunction with the Executive Director and other Office for Faculty Excellence (OFE) staff. The position is a .50 FTE buyout of a current NC State faculty member’s time. Will consider faculty with either 9 or 12 month appointments. There is potential for additional compensation for summer effort of a 9-month faculty,
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Collect information and consult with faculty interested in participating in Faculty Learning Communities to facilitate their organization
- Create teaching-centered learning communities for regular F2F and Virtual meetings of NC State’s community
- Assist in the evaluation of the Faculty Learning Communities once created
- Disseminate to NC State faculty community through networking and presentations aspects of faculty learning communities and the professional development of faculty in this realm
- Lead Faculty Writing and Grading Retreats with support from OFE staff
