Types of Fulbright Awards

    • These awards comprise the bulk of awards offered and include opportunities for professionals, artists, and scholars at all career-levels. Location and eligibility vary across all awards, and some awards may be restricted to certain career levels or types of scholars. Application due September 15, 2023. Length: Semester.

  • Fulbright Distinguished Scholar Awards
    • These awards are viewed as the most prestigious appointments in the Fulbright Scholar Program. Awards are open to scholars who have more than seven years of experience in their discipline or area of expertise, though some awards may further restrict eligibility. Length: 4-6 weeks.
  • Fulbright Flex Awards
    • Fulbright Flex welcomes applications from scholars who propose multiple, short-term stays in the host country over a period of one to two years. The Flex option is available to scholars interested in research, teaching, or pursuing a combination of teaching and research. The catalog of awards will give detailed information on the Flex parameters for each participating country. Length: 4-6 weeks.
  • Postdoctoral and Early Career Awards
    • This award presents excellent opportunities for recently minted scholars to deepen their expertise, to acquire new skills, to work with additional resources and to make connections with others in their fields, all while serving as cultural ambassadors. Postdoctoral awards are available in all fields of study, from STEM, to the arts, humanities and social sciences. Length: 4-6 weeks.
  • Fulbright Specialist Program
    • This Program pairs highly qualified U.S. academics and professionals with host institutions abroad to share their expertise, strengthen institutional linkages, hone their skills, gain international experience, and learn about other cultures while building capacity at their overseas host institutions. The program aims to provide a short-term, on-demand resource to international host institutions, giving them greater flexibility in how they participate with Fulbright. Specialists are strongly encouraged to continue to work with host institutions in the years following their initial exchange, creating opportunities for ongoing cooperation and consultancies. Please see the application process and timeline here. Length: 4-6 weeks.
    • Please note that Fulbright Specialist projects (which are shorter term, between 14 and 42 days) have an educational or training focus, address institutional priorities, and promote beneficial linkages between American and foreign host institutions. Specialists may conduct activities including, but not limited to:
      • Delivering a seminar or workshop
      • Consulting on faculty or workforce development
      • Developing academic or training curricula and materials
      • Lecturing at the graduate or undergraduate level
      • Conducting needs assessments or evaluations for a program or institution
    • Personal research is not supported under the Fulbright Specialist Program. If you are interested in conducting research abroad, consider the Scholar Program.
    • Any host institution in a participating country can host a Specialist so long as they meet the eligibility requirements. As such, there are no “preapproved” host institutions. Please reference the public directory to see which institutions past grantees have collaborated with.
    • Fulbright reviews applications to the Specialist Roster every other month. Please see the deadlines here. Once an individual is approved to join the Roster, they begin a three-year tenure in which they are eligible to be matched to an approved project. If they would like to apply to open projects once on the Roster for which the host institution is seeking applications, they may have less flexibility on choosing project dates – however if they are interested in working with a host institution abroad to develop a project with themselves as the pre-identified Specialist to complete the project, they may have more flexibility on dates. Ultimately, the program is host institution-driven.
