Call for Applications: OFE Faculty Fellows

The Office for Faculty Excellence is seeking two faculty fellows to join us for 2022-2023. Learn more about these opportunities below, and please share them widely with potential applicants by directing them to our website.

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Faculty Fellow – 2022-2023

Essential Job Duties

The SoTL Faculty Fellow will participate in the planning, operation, and assessment of a comprehensive Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Institute for faculty at NC State in conjunction with the Executive Director and other Office for Faculty Excellence (OFE) staff. This faculty fellow position comes with $5000 for the academic year 2022-2023. Faculty with either 9 or 12 month appointments are eligible. There is potential for additional compensation for summer effort. This position will be for one year with the possibility for renewal through a second year. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist OFE staff with the facilitation of the SoTL Institute in May 2023.
  • Consult with faculty interested in SoTL research to connect with available campus resources (library, writing, copyright, IRB, etc.)
  • Work with SoTL Institute participants who are completing SoTL projects.
  • Assist OFE staff with the preparation for the next offering of the Institute.

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Terminal degree in a relevant field required
  • Experience teaching in higher education
  • Current faculty member at NC State
  • Expertise in higher education pedagogy and instructional design
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with a variety of constituencies
  • Ability to work independently within a structure of collaboration and teamwork
  • Proficiency with Google G Suite, Microsoft Office, and Moodle
  • Familiarity with tools for information access, collaboration, and instruction using current technologies

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Graduate of the OFE’s SoTL Institute
  • Experience as a SoTL Researcher
  • Experience leading or training others in research projects

Faculty Learning Communities (FLC) Faculty Fellow – 2022-2023

Essential Job Duties

The Faculty Learning Communities (FLC) Faculty Fellow will participate in the planning, implementation, operation, and assessment of a comprehensive program to create Faculty Learning Communities for NC State faculty, in conjunction with the Executive Director and other Office for Faculty Excellence (OFE) staff. The position is a .50 FTE buyout of a current NC State faculty member’s time. Will consider faculty with either 9 or 12 month appointments. There is potential for additional compensation for summer effort of a 9-month faculty.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Collect information and consult with faculty interested in participating in Faculty Learning Communities to facilitate their organization
  • Create teaching-centered learning communities for regular F2F and Virtual meetings of NC State’s community
  • Assist in the evaluation of the Faculty Learning Communities once created
  • Disseminate to NC State faculty community through networking and presentations aspects of faculty learning communities and the professional development of faculty in this realm
  • Lead Faculty Writing and Grading Retreats with support from OFE staff

Apply Now: 2022 Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Institute

SOTL 2022Applications are now open for 2022 Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Institute (SoTL). The SoTL Institute is a program designed with busy faculty members in mind who would like to explore teaching as a form of scholarly work. It provides NC State faculty with skills, funding, mentorship, and support to conduct research in teaching and learning. Participants will learn about SoTL and discipline-based education research (DBER), as well as design and implement a research project to study teaching and learning in their course or courses.

This is a 1-year commitment that begins with an intensive Virtual Institute held in mid-May. For this year, the dates are Monday, May 9, Wednesday, May 11 and Friday, May 13, 2022.There are 4 follow-up meetings in August 2022, October 2022, January 2023, and April 2023, all held on the last Monday of the month from 3:00-4:00 PM. Participants will present a poster with their findings at the 2023 Teaching and Learning Symposium held at the end of February 2023. Back to Basics: Facilitating and Managing Engagement in Flexible Course Experiences

OFE’s Spring Back to Basics series continues next week with Facilitating and Managing Engagement in Flexible Course Experiences (Tuesday, April 5, 2:00-3:00 p.m. via Zoom). Flexible course experiences can make it difficult for students to feel a sense of connection and belonging. Creating opportunities for student-student interaction and teacher-student interaction is critically important for student success.

The Back to Basics series is led by OFE’s Dr. Maria Gallardo-Williams (Senior Faculty Development Specialist) and Dr. Diane Chapman (Executive Director and Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Development).

Faculty Conversation Series: Three Simple Ways to Bring Scholarship into Your Teaching Practice

Zoom stock imageOFE’s Faculty Conversation Series continues next week with with Three Simple Ways to Bring Scholarship into Your Teaching Practice (April 14, 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.). Series facilitator Dr. Maria Gallardo-Williams and OFE Faculty Fellow Dr. Zakiya Leggett will talk about how your teaching informs your scholarship, and how you can turn that into published work. Join us for a session filled with tips, inspiration, and information.

Free Registration for ITLC Lilly Online Conference

DELTA and the Office for Faculty Excellence are pleased to offer NC State faculty, staff and graduate students free registration for the ITLC Lilly Online Conference, occurring April 6, 13, 20, and 27, 2022 with asynchronous sessions available through June 2022. The Lilly conference is focused on enhancing online, onsite and hybrid teaching and learning. Attendees will enjoy 4 full days of conference programming, conveniently scheduled across four Wednesdays to reduce disruption to your teaching schedule. The conference is geared toward faculty and administrators at various stages in their academic careers, representing nearly every discipline found in higher education.

Attendees will enjoy a variety of 20-minute and 40-minute asynchronous sessions, traditional plenary addresses, synchronous facilitated discussions, and poster presentations addressing contemporary issues and include proven, innovative pedagogies. The NC State site license provides up to 150 free conference registrations for faculty, staff and graduate students using their NC State email addresses. The Office for Faculty Excellence is managing registration for the conference and will gather registration requests and send them to Lilly Online in batches. If you want to attend the conference, complete the registration form. You will receive a confirmation of your registration from the Office for Faculty Excellence and later from ITLC Lilly Online Conference when we send them the batch registrations.
