OFE Staffing News: Welcome to Maria Gallardo-Williams!

Maria Gallardo-WilliamsWe would like to announce that Maria Gallardo-Williams has accepted a full-time position as Senior Faculty Development Specialist with the Office for Faculty Excellence. Maria comes to us from the Department of Chemistry, where for the past 18 years she has demonstrated a deep, sustainable commitment to the scholarship of teaching and learning.

She has built a distinguished and wide-ranging portfolio that includes instruction in large format lecture courses, laboratory instruction and management, engagement of students, development of curricular materials, incorporation of modern technology, and support of other faculty in their educational research.

Her endeavors are consistently marked by innovation, creativity, energy, and effectiveness. This is reflected in the many awards and accolades that she has received, including the Gertrude Cox Award for Innovative Excellence in Teaching and Learning with Technology (2016), NC State University Outstanding Teacher Award (2017-2018), NC State Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professor Award (2018-2019), and most recently the NC State University Chancellor’s Creating Community Award in 2021.

Faculty Conversation Series: Engaging Students through Grading Online

Zoom stock imageOFE’s Faculty Conversation Series continues this Wednesday with Engaging Students through Grading Online (February 23, 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.). Join series facilitator Dr. Maria Gallardo-Williams and OFE Faculty Fellow Dr. Michelle Bartlett to talk about tips and techniques, such as video grading, that will improve and expedite your online grading while engaging your students.

This Friday: Teaching and Learning Symposium

The Office for Faculty Excellence is pleased to host their 2022 Teaching and Learning Symposium this Friday, February 25, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., virtually via Zoom. This year’s theme will be Creating Our New Normal. The Symposium will include a keynote lecture, concurrent sessions, and a poster session.

Dr. Susan D. BlumOur keynote speaker will be Dr. Susan D Blum. Dr. Blum is a professor of anthropology at the University of Notre Dame, currently fixated on education and pedagogical praxis, after a previous incarnation as a China anthropologist. She is the author of “I Love Learning; I Hate School”: An Anthropology of College (Cornell, 2016) and My Word! Plagiarism and College Culture (Cornell, 2009), and the editor of the recent volume Ungrading: Why Rating Students Undermines Learning (and What to Do Instead) (West Virginia University Press, 2020). With 5 co-authors, she has written “A Theory of Public Higher Education,” published in Soundings: An Interdisciplinary Journal in July 2021.

We invite faculty, postdoctoral scholars, and staff from all member institutions of the Cooperating Raleigh Colleges (NC State, Meredith College, Saint Augustine’s University, Shaw University, Wake Tech Community College, William Peace University) to attend.
