Apply to the Faculty LEAD Program

Are you a faculty member who:

  • Is interested in moving into a leadership role?
  • Has recently accepted a leadership role?
  • Is an experienced faculty leader wanting to hone your skills?

The Faculty LEAD (Leadership Education and Development) program may be right for you. This certificate normally has a cost associated with it, however the Office for Faculty Excellence is paying this charge for up to 30 faculty members.

The Faculty LEAD Program, sponsored by NC State’s Learning and Organizational Development and Office for Faculty Excellence is intended for faculty members who want to become better leaders. This year-long, cohort-based program is synchronous and offered via Zoom. Faculty participants will participate in six synchronous meetings that will result in a Faculty LEAD certificate:

  • Sept. 24, 2021: Leading with Emotional Intelligence
    Provides an overview of the concepts of Emotional Intelligence (EI) and Emotional Quotient (EQ). By harnessing the power of Emotional Intelligence, leaders can apply these attributes to motivate and engage their teams, strengthen cooperation and increase performance.
  • Oct. 15, 2021: Leading Teams
    The most common team challenges are: conflicting goals, role clarity, ineffective communication, and poor planning. For teamwork to be successful, everyone must have clear, shared goals; a sense of commitment; the ability to collaborate. Explore the developmental needs of teams and identify strategies for helping the team effectively move toward enhanced team performance, including effective meetings.
  • Nov. 19, 2021: Improving Personal Effectiveness with Versatility
    Gain useful insights of social styles and communication patterns to engage others to achieve results and improve team dynamics. Build self-awareness of behavior and an understanding of the importance of improving workplace relationships to increase productivity.
  • Feb. 18, 2022: Managing Difficult Conversations
    Learn how to prepare for a difficult situation, lead the conversation with an effective step-by-step guide, and apply this new skill to faculty-centric scenarios.
  • March 25, 2022: Financials for Faculty
    Discover the nuts and bolts of financials through discussions with university administrators to review budgets, multiple types of funding, research project financials, travel, accounts payable, procurement and other relevant financial information specifically for faculty.
  • April 16, 2022: Leadership Dialogue
    The program concludes with a panel of university leaders sharing lessons learned throughout their leadership journey. Gain valuable insights for how to take your leadership to the next level.

To apply for one of the 30 spots, fill out the application form by 5:00 p.m., Sept. 3. Acceptance decisions will be sent on Sept. 9.

RED Application Deadline Extended: Core Teaching Certification and Inclusive Teaching Certification

The application deadline for the Fall 2021 online cohorts of the Core Teaching Certification (CTC) and Inclusive Teaching Certification (ITC) are being accepted through Friday, Aug. 27. Beginning this year, applications will only be accepted in August. This will be your only opportunity to apply to the CTC or ITC this academic year!

Fulbright U.S. Scholars Program

Offers nearly 470 teaching, research or combination teaching/research awards in over 125 countries. Opportunities are available for college and university faculty and administrators as well as for professionals, artists, journalists, scientists, lawyers, independent scholars and many others.

Eligibility Snapshot (see full eligibility requirements)

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Previous recipients of a Fulbright Scholar award are eligible to apply for another award two years after the date of completion of previous award. Recipients of Fulbright Specialist Program grant are not required to adhere to two-year wait period before applying for a Fulbright Scholar award
  • Applicants who have resided abroad for five or more consecutive years in the six-year period preceding the application deadline are ineligible. A period of nine months or more during a calendar year constitutes a full year.

Deadline: Sept. 15 at 11:59 p.m. PST, Letter of Invitation (if required due by Oct. 1)

Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship

Recognizes and rewards outstanding early-career faculty who have the potential to revolutionize their fields of study. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in chemistry, computer science, Earth system science, economics, mathematics, neuroscience, physics, or a related field.

  • Candidates must be tenure-track, though untenured as of the application deadline.
  • Candidates must carry a regular teaching obligation.

Sony Research Award Programs

Provides funding for cutting-edge academic research and helps build a collaborative relationship between faculty and Sony researchers. With awards up to $150,000 USD* per year for each accepted proposal, both the Faculty Innovation Award and Focused Research Award create new opportunities for university faculties to engage in pioneering research that could drive new technologies, industries and the future.

Eligibility Snapshot (see full eligibility requirements)

  • Open to full-time professors (adjunct professors are not eligible) or researchers and who are eligible to supervise Ph.D. students. Full profs, assoc. profs, and assist. profs are eligible.
  • Applications that have a PI and one or more co-PIs for the same proposal are acceptable. However, only one award is made to the primary PI and the primary PI’s institution.
  • Submit proposals for a one year period only. No multi-year proposals will be accepted. An extension of the research may be possible depending upon the results of the research collaboration in year one, but will require a separate discussion.

Guggenheim Fellowship

Fellowships to further the development of scholars and artists by assisting them to engage in research in any field of knowledge and creation in any of the arts. Grants are made for a min. of 6 months and a max. of 12 months. Purpose of the Guggenheim Fellowship is to provide Fellows with blocks of time in which they can work with as much creative freedom as possible. No special conditions attach to grants, and Fellows may spend funds in any manner they deem necessary for their work.

  • Intended for advanced professionals–those who as writers, scholars, or scientists have a significant record of publication, or as artists, playwrights, filmmakers, photographers, composers, or the like, have a significant record of exhibition or performance of their work.
  • Anthology, oral history, e-book, or textbooks are not supported. Awards are not available to support writing of literature for children or young readers, or support any other type of work (e.g., films, plays, etc.) intended for young audiences.

Simons Fellows in Mathematics & Theoretical Physics

Simons Fellowships in both Mathematics and Theoretical Physics makes sabbatical research leaves more productive by extending them from a single term to a full academic year. For awards made in 2022, the foundation encourages applications from those severely impacted by COVID-19 and for whom travel during the sabbatical period will be difficult. The foundation aims to support these sabbatical eligible fellows, even if remaining at their home institution.

Eligibility Snapshot (see full eligibility requirements)

  • Restricted to sabbatical or equivalent leave-eligible faculty who wish to use the award for purpose of extending at least a single-term sabbatical research leave to a full academic year.
  • You must be approved for a full year of sabbatical research leave, consisting of two consecutive semesters or three consecutive quarters with at least 50% of the year fully paid by the home university and no more than 50% fully or partly supported by the fellowship.
  • Awards based on applicant’s scientific accomplishments in the five-year period preceding the application and on the potential scientific impact of work to be done during the leave period.

National Humanities Center Fellowship

Offers up to 40 residential fellowships for advanced study in the humanities for the period of September through May. Mid-career and senior scholars encouraged to apply. In addition to scholars from all fields of the humanities, NHC accepts individuals from the natural and social sciences, the arts, the professions, and public life who are engaged in humanistic projects.

  • Midcareer and Senior Scholars. Emerging scholars with a strong record of peer-reviewed work may also apply. Successful candidates usually have published at least one single-author book or a significant body of peer-reviewed scholarship
  • Does not fund projects that are collections of primary sources, edited volumes, creative projects (works of fiction or poetry), or explicitly pedagogical works (syllabi and textbooks). Any projects that are not sufficiently advanced beyond the dissertation project are also ineligible.
