Applications Due Friday: 2021 Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Institute

Turn educational innovation into tangible scholarship

The Office of Faculty Development invites you to apply for the 2021 Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Institute (SoTL), a program designed with busy faculty members in mind who would like to explore teaching as a form of scholarly work. The SoTL Institute provides NC State faculty with skills, funding, mentorship, and support to conduct research in teaching and learning.

Participants will learn about SoTL and discipline-based education research (DBER), as well as design and implement a research project to study teaching and learning in their course or courses.

The SoTL 2021 theme is Crafting Educational Innovation in Difficult Times. Let’s reflect on the hard lessons learned during this difficult year and turn them into innovative scholarship that can be published and shared.

Eligibility: Any full-time faculty member at NC State may apply to participate in this program.

Purpose: The purpose of the SoTL Institute is to support the development of a SoTL or DBER project. In the year-long experience, faculty will develop research questions for educational research, design a study using quantitative and qualitative assessment techniques, and gather evidence that can be used to answer these questions. In this program, participants will receive guidance from experienced SoTL researchers to:

Develop an educational research agenda
Lower barriers to presentation/publication
Receive mentorship, funding, and support
Belong to an educational research community

Program Dates: This is a 1-year commitment that begins with an intensive Virtual Institute held in mid-May. For this year, the dates are Monday, May 10, Wednesday, May 12 and Friday, May 14, 2021.There are 4 follow-up meetings in August 2021, October 2021, January 2022, and April 2022, all held on the last Monday of the month from 3:00-4:00 PM. Participants will present a poster with their findings at the 2022 Teaching and Learning Symposium held at the end of February 2022.

Funding: Each participant is eligible for a mini-grant for up to $1,250 that can be used for conference travel or other allowed project-related expenses.
Applications open Monday, March 1, 2021 and close at 11:59pm on Friday, April 9, 2021. Proposals to study topics related to the theme Crafting Educational Innovation in Difficult Times will be given priority in the selection process. If accepted, you must commit to attending all program sessions. Acceptance notifications will go out on Monday, April 19, 2021.

Writing Wednesdays: Virtual Faculty Writing Retreats

Do you have a writing task that you’ve been putting off? The Office of Faculty Development offers virtual writing retreats, Writing Wednesdays, designed to support you in getting it done!

Until we return to in-person meetings on campus, the OFD team has designed synchronous 2.5-hour mini-retreats using the Pomodoro method. Our next session will be held April 7.
During these sessions, faculty participants will:

Work toward a specific writing task in a structured and supportive environment;
Be able to access resources from campus experts such as the Libraries, and the IRB office; and
Discover tips for preparing for the retreat and getting your writing done.

Special bonus for Writing Wednesdays: we have pre-recorded child edutainment provided by Arts NC State for your Wolfpack pups ages 3 to 12 years.

Back to Basics: Classroom Assessment Techniques

Many faculty members have never had any formal training in education. For this reason, OFD is offering some simple introductory offerings to get faculty on track with their teaching. The next session in this series will be held next week (Tuesday, April 6).
Metacognition to Improve Student Outcomes (Tuesday, April 6, 2021, 2:00-3:00 p.m.), Led by Dr. Melissa Ramirez, Assistant Teaching Professor, Department of Biological Sciences: How do we make sure that students learn in our courses? We start by giving them ownership of their learning process. In this workshop we will share some simple ways to engage students in metacognition, showing students how they learn, and how to maximize their efforts to master the course content.

Online Lilly Conference Registrations Available

DELTA and the Office of Faculty Development are pleased to announce the purchase of a site license for the ITLC Online Lilly Conference, occurring May 5 – May 26, 2021 with asynchronous sessions available through August 31. The Lilly conference is focused on enhancing online, onsite and hybrid teaching and learning. Attendees will enjoy 4 full days of conference programming, conveniently scheduled across four Wednesdays to reduce disruption to your teaching schedule.

The conference is geared toward faculty and administrators at various stages in their academic careers, representing nearly every discipline found in higher education. Attendees will enjoy a variety of 20-minute and 40-minute asynchronous sessions, traditional plenary addresses, synchronous facilitated discussions, and poster presentations addressing contemporary issues and include proven, innovative pedagogies.

No Cost For The NC State Community

The NC State site license provides up to 150 free conference registrations for faculty, staff and graduate students using their NC State email addresses. Registration is normally $325 per person. Registration includes:

How to Register

The Office of Faculty Development is managing registration for the conference and will gather registration requests and send them to Lilly Online in batches. If you want to attend the conference, complete the registration form. You will receive a confirmation of your registration from the Office of Faculty Development and later from ITLC Online Lilly Conference when we send them the batch registrations.

Call for Proposals: ISETL Virtual Conference on Innovative Pedagogy in Higher Education (Due May 15)

Conference Workshops – September 29 – October 1
Conference Sessions – October 7 – 9

The goal of ISETL is to explore, share, and promote innovative pedagogical approaches. The Conference on Innovative Pedagogy in Higher Education is an opportunity to learn from each other.

ISETL seeks proposals that bring something new to the classroom: a new strategy, a new learning approach, a new classroom (or virtual classroom) technology application, a new student support mechanism, or a new method for assessing. Innovation comes in all sizes, from smaller strategies to assess student learning, to larger approaches for fostering student engagement. ISETL is looking for both.

ISETL invites college and university faculty and practitioners from all disciplines to submit proposals for practice sessions, panel sessions, research sessions, or poster sessions that reflect the focus of the mission of ISETL.

Deadline for proposal submission is May 15 2021, with notification of decision by May 29, 2021.
