Terminology Used in Review Timelines

Please refer to the following resources on terminology used in review timelines.

Academic and Fiscal Year Contracts

The Provost’s Office has worked with WolfTech to develop an online widget to assist with tenure clock calculations for new hires. The goal of this tool is to help departments/colleges determine contract end dates and RPT review cycles for new tenure-track faculty members (both 9 and 12 month), particularly for those with appointments that start at a time other than the beginning of the academic or fiscal year. In these cases the Tenure policy (4.2 and 4.3.1) allows the initial probationary term to be adjusted such that for an Assistant Professor the appointment shall not result in an initial term of fewer than three (3) years or greater than four (4) years and six (6) months, with an end date of May 15 for academic year contracts or June 30 for fiscal year contracts AND for an Associate Professor, the appointment shall not result in an initial term of fewer than three (3) years and six (6) months or greater than five (5) years, with an end date of May 15 or June 30.

Appointments made after April 22, 2005* should have end dates of May 15 for academic year, 9-month appointments or June 30 for fiscal year, 12-month appointments in order to coincide with our RPT cycle. If a faculty member’s end date is not one of these, please contact Amy_Jinnette@ncsu.edu.

Additional Information

*Note 1: The Request for Tenure Clock Extension Form (PRV-002) is to be submitted to the Office of the Provost for extenuating circumstances that warrant the need to extend a faculty member’s tenure clock.

*Note 2: The Notification of Birth, Adoption, or Placement of a Foster Child Form is to be submitted by the faculty member to the Department Head. The Department Head is to submit the form to the college. The college will send a copy of the form to Amy Jinnette, Campus Box 7101.

*Note 3: On April 22, 2005 the Academic Tenure Policy (now titled Appointment, Reappointment, Promotion and Permanent Tenure Policy) was revised to allow initial tenure-track appointments to vary from exactly four years in order to allow the end dates to coincide with our RPT cycle and thereby avoid adjustments later. So, initial contracts can vary from 3 years to 4 1/2 years in length.
