Bio

Dr. Ayse Ercumen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at North Carolina State University and core faculty in the Global Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Cluster. Dr. Ercumen’s expertise is in infectious disease and environmental epidemiology. Her research investigates drinking water and recreational water quality, waterborne infections, environmental and zoonotic disease transmission, antimicrobial resistance, and environmental (e.g., WASH) interventions. She uses epidemiological, microbiological and exposure assessment methods to understand transmission of enteropathogens and antimicrobial resistant bacteria through diverse environmental pathways, study effects of climate variability on pathogen transmission, and evaluate the effectiveness and climate resilience of environmental interventions in reducing infectious disease burdens among underserved populations. She has conducted research in Bangladesh, India, Uganda, Malawi and the US, including large-scale randomized controlled trials and cohort studies.
