Mark BernhardVice Provost for Continuing Education

Dr. Mark Bernhard is the Vice Provost for Continuing Education at NC State University. In this role, he provides strategic leadership for and coordination of NC State’s non-credit continuing education programs and offerings including the Center for Urban Affairs & Community Services; Customized Contractual Education; the McKimmon Conference & Training Center; the Office of Professional Development (OPD); OPD Technology Training; the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute; The Collaborative; and the Upper Coastal Plain Learning Council. He also serves as the executive director of the McKimmon Center for Extension and Continuing Education and is responsible for the Center’s program development and administration of a $44 million budget, and provides oversight of the management of Center operations and facilities. He oversees a division of more than 200 full-time and part-time staff.

Previously, he served as the associate provost for outreach and engagement at the University of Southern Indiana. He has also served as the director of continuing and professional education for Virginia Tech, and as a senior conference planner and conference planner at Penn State. Bernhard has spent much of his higher education career advocating for land-grant universities with a robust focus on building partnerships and programs for adult learners, entrepreneurial collaboration, and making a positive difference in the lives of individuals, organizations and communities.

Bernhard received his bachelor’s degree in political science from Bucknell University, his master’s degree in sport management from The Ohio State University, and his Ph.D. in workforce education and development from Penn State.
