Bio

As Director of the Marine Aquaculture Research Center; William White Distinguished Professor of Sturgeon Aquaculture; Extension Specialist; Editor, Aquacultural Engineering and Professor in Biological and Agricultural Engineering, I am interested in caring for creation, stewarding and ideally restoring coastal, aquatic zones and species, while also providing food for a growing population. This ‘both/and’ approach is necessary: we simply must care for both humans and the environment. I personally believe this is a nearly impossible problem, but with divine inspiration and humility, I feel called to contribute, to find ways to consider ourselves and our systems not as ‘consumers’ or ‘users’ but as ‘producers’, ‘contributors’ and ‘restorers’. So my work is both technical (I serve extension as the state’s aquacultural engineering specialist; publish articles in science and technology journals; explore biological, engineering and hydrological themes; but also consider ethics; education; extension; outreach; service and our responsibilities in these areas. I am interested in collaborations and thankful for some amazing colleagues and community members who continue to collaborate and challenge and keep me growing as I seek to feed people and restore the planet.
