Faculty Involvement In Selecting Academic Leaders

Selection of a Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor, Dean, or Academic Department Head/Chair:

The administrative official responsible for the appointments listed below consults with appropriate individuals and groups, including the faculty constituency directly affected, concerning the size and composition of the nomination committee.

  • Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor:  The Chancellor consults with the Faculty Senate when filling the position of Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor.  The Chancellor shall conduct the search in accordance with POL 05.55.1 Search and Selection Procedures for Senior Academic and Administrative Officers (Tier I).
  • Dean: The Provost consults with the Faculty Senate members from the college involved when filling the position of Dean.  The Provost asks the Senators of the college to conduct an election to select by secret ballot a list of faculty members to recommend to the Provost.  At least one-third of the Nomination Committee will be selected by this method.
  • Department Head/Chair: The Dean consults with a faculty group representing each rank within the department involved when filling the position of Department Head/Chair. The Dean asks this group to conduct an election to select by secret ballot at least one-third of the Nomination Committee.

The administrative official responsible for the appointments listed above will seek the assistance of the Nomination Committee to:

  • Solicit suggestions concerning criteria and/or nominations for the position.
  • Review and evaluate applicants.
  • Recommend applicants for preliminary telephone and/or airport interviews as appropriate.
  • Recommend finalists for on-campus interviews.
  • When candidates are brought to campus, help inform the faculty and provide appropriate opportunities for participation in the interview process.
  • Provide feedback on the finalists.

Selection of a Vice Provost and Associate and Assistant Vice Chancellors, Associate or Assistant Dean, or Director or an Associate or Assistant Department Head/Chair

  • Vice Provosts and Associate and Assistant Vice Chancellors Involved in Academic Programs: The Provost shall include the Chair of the Faculty and other faculty members as appropriate members of the group which reviews candidates for positions of Vice Provost or Associate and Assistant Vice Chancellor involved in instruction, research, or extension. The advice of the Faculty Senate will be obtained through the Chair of the Faculty.
  • Associate and Assistant Deans and Associate and Assistant Directors: The Dean should present his or her candidate or slate of candidates to a representative committee of the faculty and seek the advice and counsel of the committee. Specific procedures for this purpose should be developed by each college, subject to the approval of the provost. Each dean should seek the advice and counsel of the faculty or representative faculty members in the college in the formulation of procedures, and should assure that all faculty who may be affected by such appointments are informed of the approved procedures prior to their implementation.
  • Associate and Assistant Department Heads/Chairs or Equivalent: The department head/chair presents his or her candidate(s) to the Departmental Voting Faculty of the department and seeks their advice and counsel. Specific procedures for this purpose should be developed by each department, subject to the approval of the college dean. Each department head/chair should seek the advice and counsel of the faculty or representative faculty members in the department in the formulation of procedures, and should assure that all faculty who may be affected by such appointments be informed of the approved procedures prior to their implementation.
