About Lydia

Lydia Sellers will embark on her first year of the Master of Science program in Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management in the upcoming fall semester. Having graduated with distinction from Duke University, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Science and Policy, accompanied by a minor in Cinematic Arts and a Certificate in Documentary Studies. Actively involved as a volunteer on the Community READY (Resilience Education & Action leD by Youth) program, overseen by Drs. Kathryn Stevenson and Liz DeMattia, Lydia contributes to a transformative curriculum integrating psychological, ecological, and community resilience concepts for middle school students. Motivated by the program’s expansion from rural Carteret County to urban Durham Public Schools, Lydia brings a unique research perspective to explore the intersections of resilience education and environmental justice in diverse communities. Her research endeavors aim to address place-specific conceptualizations of resilience, themes of equity and justice, and responses to documented environmental injustices in both settings. Employing a multi-modal, mixed-method approach, Lydia intends to conduct field observations, interviews, and surveys to unravel the nuanced dynamics of resilience education and community engagement. Under Dr. Stevenson’s guidance, she aspires to contribute valuable insights informing inclusive and responsive environmental education program design. Additionally, through her work, Lydia endeavors to foster a deeper understanding of environmental issues and empower communities to take proactive steps toward a more sustainable and just future.
