Introducing the Participatory Sciences Graduate Certificate

The Global One Health Academy offers graduate certificates to students interested in gaining new skills in global One Health to further their academic and professional careers. We are excited to announce the Participatory Sciences Graduate Certificate, developed in partnership with Citizen Science Campus.

NC State is a recognized leader in the field of citizen science and other participatory sciences – the range of approaches in which science and society co-produce new knowledge. Many disciplines have their own forms of participatory research, including ecology (ecological monitoring), geography (community mapping, volunteer geographic information), public health (community science, data donation), engineering (participatory sensing), microbiology (crowdsourcing), biochemistry (digital games), meteorology (volunteer recording), and history (digital humanities). Educators, community-engagement specialists, librarians, and others influence the ethical, legal, and practical aspects of participatory research, as well as underlying theories and critiques. Participatory science methods are used as indicators for the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, and can be an effective way to gather data for complex and widespread challenges, such as those central to global One Health.

The Participatory Sciences Certificate trains graduate students to address pressing global issues through collaboration with the public on scientific research. With instruction in competencies related to public science, science communication, data management and visualization, and informal science education, this certificate emphasizes interdisciplinary thinking, problem-solving, and research; global awareness and cultural competency; and viewing scientific solutions through a holistic lens that considers environmental justice, equity and sustainability, and long-term benefits and impacts.

Interested NC State graduate or professional students are encouraged to apply!
