GOHA Announces Fall 2024 Graduate Travel Awardees

The Global One Health Academy is excited to announce the recipients for the Fall 2024 Graduate Travel Awards to support international or domestic travel that advances global One Health-related research. Four eligible NC State graduate students were awarded funding for travel occurring July through December 2024. Congratulations to our awardees!

Dayvion Adams

Entomology | College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
Destination
: Kyoto, Japan
Purpose: Attend International Congress of Entomology

Dayvion is a 3rd year PhD candidate in the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology under the supervision of Dr. Michael Reiskind. He received both his undergraduate and master’s degree from Texas A&M University studying the effects of avian malaria pathogens on the behavior and survivorship of mosquitoes that transmit human pathogens of public health concern. He has worked at the one-health interface throughout his academic career often working in human and animal health systems, and plans to continue this into his future career endeavors with special focus on public health disparities in marginalized groups of people. He has currently published 4 first-author publications with others in progress. In his free time, he enjoys video games, eating good food, and singing karaoke (all with friends!)

Nicole Odell

Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management | College of Natural Resources
Destination
: Detroit, Michigan
Purpose: Attend the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals Conference

Nicole Odell is a PhD student in Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management in the College of Natural Resources, and is under the mentorship of Dr. J. Aaron Hipp. She previously earned an MSc in Health Promotion from the University of Colorado Colorado Springs and holds a BA and MS in Chemistry from Florida State University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, respectively.

Nicole’s research focuses on the intersection of transportation and recreation, exploring how local governments can enhance public and environmental health through sustainable transportation policies and infrastructure development. An endurance sports enthusiast, she enjoys running and cycling on the greenways around Raleigh.

Fabiola Santiago

Veterinary Program | College of Veterinary Medicine
Destination
: Ecuador
Purpose: Research project under Dr. Pairis-Garcia, evaluating the correlation between animal welfare and the dependence on antimicrobials (AMR resistance) in guinea pig populations.

Fabiola Santiago Rivera is a rising second year student from the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine. Born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, she grew up surrounded by dogs, cats, and various farm animals. I completed my bachelor’s in biology at the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico. Now, she wants to work with animals she has never encountered before and focus on Zoological and Wildlife Medicine, with an interest in conservation and animal welfare. She is participating in the NC State CVM’s Veterinary Summer Scholar Program where she will be conducting my research project under Dr. Pairis-Garcia. This study aims to evaluate the correlation between animal welfare and the dependence on antimicrobials in meat guinea pigs by understanding human and agricultural knowledge, attitudes and practices in the Ecuadorian context. With the support of GOHA, she’ll travel to Quito, Ecuador in July 2024 which will give her the opportunity for hands-on data collection on farms, conducting in-person interviews and surveys, and explore the cultural diversity that Ecuador has to offer, including collaborating and interacting with peers from the veterinary school.

Jake Seiter

Plant Pathology | College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
Destination
: Memphis, Tennessee
Purpose: Attend American Phytopathological Society Annual Meeting: Plant Health 2024

Jake Seiter is a 1st Year PhD student in the plant pathology graduate program under the mentorship of Dr. Dorith Rotenberg in the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology. He received his bachelor’s degree in plant and environmental sciences from Clemson University where he was first introduced to the study of plant virology. His undergraduate research focused on vector transmission dynamics and ecology of grapevine red blotch virus in southeastern vineyards. Jake is currently a NSF Graduate Research Fellow whose current research efforts focus on understanding the re-emergence of maize mosaic virus epidemics on the Hawaiian Islands. In his research, he is interested in using genomics technologies to help unravel complex ecological interactions between plants, viruses, and their insect vectors.
