Postdoctoral Support Awards
Award amounts are available up to $5,000 to support research or training expenses that will ultimately advance interdisciplinary One Health research or implementation by postdoctoral scholars at NC State.
One Health is an interdisciplinary framework that recognizes the interconnectedness of humans, animals, plants, and the environment, and seeks to sustainably optimize health across these systems. Research that utilizes the One Health approach investigates problems from multiple angles, applying systems thinking to address complex global challenges. To accelerate postdoctoral research in One Health at NC State, the NC State Global One Health Academy is pleased to announce a new funding program for Postdoctoral Support Awards.
Award amounts are available up to $5,000 to support research or training expenses that will ultimately advance interdisciplinary One Health research or implementation by postdoctoral scholars at NC State.
Eligibility
We welcome applications from postdoctoral scholars from any disciplinary background at NC State. All applicants must have One Health-related research (i.e., at the intersection of human, animal, plant, and/or environmental health) that aligns with one or more of the following Global One Health Academy thematic areas: food and water solutions, infectious diseases, and/or climate and global change. Any awarded funds must be used while the awardee is employed at NC State. Funds cannot be transferred to another institution or to another PI at NC State if the awardee moves to a new position outside of NC State.
General activities supported:
GOHA invites applications that will support a variety of activities that advance interdisciplinary One Health research. Funded activities may include, but are not limited to:
- Collection and analysis of data
- Travel to support research, attendance of workshops/trainings, or attendance of conferences
- Development of research communication products or other activities that support dissemination of findings to the public
- Hiring an undergraduate student to assist in research efforts
- Publication fees
While the uses of funds are flexible, all applications should ultimately be advancing the applicant’s professional development and One Health research efforts.
Application Materials
Applications must include:
- Research description. Describe your research and clearly demonstrate its relevance to One Health and one or more of the Global One Health Academy thematic areas. Limit 2 pages.
- Funding request and impact statement. A description of how the funds would be used and its potential impact on your research and/or professional development. Note that there is a separate budget justification section, so detailed breakdowns of expenses are not required here. Instead, this section should communicate generally what could be accomplished if the funds are awarded, and why this award would benefit you in some unique way (e.g., supporting research directions you wouldn’t otherwise have funding for, new skill development that could impact your career trajectory, etc.). Limit 1 page.
- References Cited. No page limit
- Budget and justification. Budgets may include all normally allowed costs of research and travel except indirect costs. Budgets may not exceed $5,000. Limit 1 page.
Applications will be reviewed by faculty members from diverse disciplinary backgrounds, so should be written for a broad audience spanning the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. All components should be combined into a single PDF for submission. Proposals exceeding page limitations for any component will be returned without review.
To avoid undue bias related to previous awards or achievements, we are not requesting a CV or letter of recommendation as part of the application materials. While this allows for avoidance of prestige bias, it also removes information that could be used to vet qualications for carrying out proposed work. We ask that applicants present an accurate representation of their skills and abilities in the applications, and only apply for funds for use where they have the requisite expertise for implementation. Applicants will be assessed based on the strength of their research in the context of the One Health framework and the potential for this award to advance their research and/or professional development.
