NC One Health Collaborative
The NC One Health Collaborative brings together researchers and practitioners from academia, government, nonprofits, and private industry to support interdisciplinary professional and educational collaborations that advance One Health in North Carolina.
The NC One Health Collaborative (NC OHC) is a network that seeks to bridge research and practice in One Health in our state. Centered in the Research Triangle Park region, the NC OHC builds upon academic strengths in the area – including medicine, veterinary medicine, global health, public health, and agricultural and environmental health – while leveraging the proximity of relevant governmental agencies, nonprofits, and corporations to create a unique multi-sectoral and interdisciplinary environment for advancing One Health knowledge and implementation. NC OHC aims to connect and serve the broad community of One Health researchers and practitioners across North Carolina.

Mission

History & Leadership
The NC OHC was formed in June 2010 in collaboration with the Triangle Global Health Consortium (now the NC Global Health Alliance). The NC OHC has since been organized and led by individuals from Duke University, NC State University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and other private and governmental entities.
Once formed, it assumed leadership of a local, monthly One Health Intellectual Exchange Group (IEG) discussion series sponsored by the NC Biotechnology Center. This IEG was created in late 2008 at the request of a group of veterinary students to provide an opportunity for students, physicians, veterinarians, public health, and environmental workers – entities who rarely interact directly – to come together in conversations about overlaps in their respective areas of expertise. In 2011, the IEG series was expanded to include weekly meetings that also function as a graduate-level course, “One Health: From Philosophy to Practice.”
Since 2023, NC State’s Global One Health Academy has provided leadership and administrative support to sustain and grow the collaborative. The NC OHC maintains its status as an Exchange Group through the NC Biotechnology Center. The NC OHC Steering Committee is chaired by Meredith Spence Beaulieu (NC State) and co-chaired by Bill Pan (Duke).
Activities
The NC OHC aims to provide opportunities for integrating expertise across disciplines and stimulate interdisciplinary professional and educational collaborations in One Health.
One Health IEG discussion series & course offering
A primary activity of the NC OHC is the One Health IEG discussion series, which takes the form of lectures for an inter-institutional graduate level course that meets weekly at the NC Biotechnology Center in the fall. These lectures are open to the public and NC OHC members are encouraged to attend and engage.
Graduate and professional students (and senior-level undergraduates, by permission of the instructors) at Duke, NC State, and UNC-Chapel Hill can enroll in this unique course, “One Health: From Philosophy to Practice,” which is the only for-credit offering cross-listed between the three universities. The course provides an exciting environment for interdisciplinary exchanges, bringing together students and professionals training and working in public health, human medicine, veterinary medicine, environmental disciplines, global health, and more.
Fall 2025 Course Instructors/Discussion Series Coordinators:
- Duke: Chris Woods, Julienne Reynolds, and Ernesto Ortiz
- NC State: Michael Reiskind and Kristen Sullivan
- UNC: Mamie Sackey-Harris and Megan Lott
- Course TA: Ashley Cave (NC State)
Building a statewide One Health community
A renewed focus of the NC OHC in 2025 is to strengthen engagement with the One Health community beyond academia, and provide opportunities for meaningful interaction between academicians and practitioners. Our vision is to create community building and networking tailored to the needs and interests of non-academics – including local, state, and federal government entities, non-governmental organizations, and corporations – but that also engage with our academic partners in the Research Triangle region and across the state. This rich multi-sectoral exchange will strengthen One Health research and implementation in North Carolina, ultimately benefitting our local communities and ecosystems through improved health outcomes. More details about these efforts will be announced soon.
