  • The Office of Faculty Development is offering several events and programs this semester:
    • A new Course Design Institute will be held Monday, March 6-Tuesday, March 7 (9 a.m. – 4:45 p.m.). Priority will be given to faculty members who are working on courses that will run in the summer and fall of 2017, however, all faculty interested in redesigning or designing new courses will be considered.     • Registration is now open for our Spring Break Faculty Writing Retreat, which will be held Thursday, March 9 and Friday, March 10, 2017 (9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.) in the Hunt Library Faculty Research Commons (fifth floor). The retreat will provide dedicated space and uninterrupted time for tenure- and non tenure-track faculty to work on their spring writing projects and make effective use of spring break.     • Applications for the Spring 2017 cohort of the Certificate of Reflective Teaching program are now available. The certificate program allows faculty members to gain a strong foundational knowledge in areas of pedagogy such as assessment, course design and creating a student-centered learning environment. To apply, please complete an application at go.ncsu.edu/crtregistration. Applications are due by noon on Friday, Jan. 13.
    • Join a reading circle for the spring semester — meet a group of faculty and staff colleagues from across campus to discuss a recent text focused on current issues in higher education. Two books will be discussed: The Spark of Learning: Energizing the College Classroom with the Science of Emotion, by Sarah Rose Cavanagh, and Teaching and Learning STEM: A Practical Guide, by Richard M. Felder and Rebecca Brent. To register for either text, please sign-up at  go.ncsu.edu/readingcircles. Registrations will close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 18, and participants will be notified about their group on Friday, Jan. 20. Circles will begin the week of January 22.
  • Three NC State faculty members have been named fellows by the National Academy of Inventors. They are: B. Jayant Baliga, Distinguished University Professor of Electrical Engineering; Ruben Carbonell, Frank Hawkins Kenan Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering; and Frances S. Ligler, Lampe Distinguished Professor in the Joint NC State-UNC Department of Biomedical Engineering.
  • Four research teams from NC State have been named inaugural winners of the Game-Changing Research Incentive Program (GRIP), a three-year, $2.3 million seed-funding initiative designed to stimulate interdisciplinary and collaborative research in the Triangle.   • Leslie Boney III, previously vice president of international, community and economic engagement for the University of North Carolina system, is the new director of the Institute for Emerging Issues (IEI), effective January 1. Boney replaces interim director Richard Mahoney, who returned full-time to his position as director of the School of Public and International Affairs.
  • Five new academic department heads have recently been named. They are:
    • John Beghin, Agricultural and Resource Economics, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
    • Peter Ferket (Interim), Prestage Department of Poultry Science, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
    • Garey Fox, Biological and Agricultural Engineering, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
    • Jeff Joines, Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science, College of Textiles
    • John Lee (Interim), Teacher Education and Learning Sciences, College of Education
  • The NC State Employee Dependent’s Tuition Scholarship has been established to provide tuition scholarship assistance to full-time, first-degree undergraduate, dependent children whose parents have been employed by NC State University as permanent, full-time staff or faculty for more than three years as of July 1 of the qualifying year.  The value of this scholarship varies upon availability of funds but will be a minimum of $2,000 ($1,000 per semester) annually.   • NC State and Habitat for Humanity’s Build-a-Block project is going great! Phase 1 is on schedule for completion in mid-January. Please join Habitat for Humanity on Wednesday, Jan. 18 from noon-2 p.m. for an open house and chance to tour the townhomes before families close on the homes; RSVP to knparis@ncsu.edu by Jan 13. if you plan to attend. Construction on Phase 2 will begin on Saturday, Jan. 21, with project dedication scheduled for May 2017. To date, NC State has raised over $600,000 toward its goal of $715,000.   • The Provost’s Office is offering general information sessions on the Reappointment, Promotion, and Tenure process. The sessions will include details about the process, an overview of the website and a question and answer period. New tenure-track faculty, those who will soon be entering the RPT cycle, and anyone involved in the 2017-2018 RPT process are encouraged to attend. No registration or RSVP is needed to attend. Please familiarize yourself with the RPT website prior to the session and contact arjinnet@ncsu.edu if you have any questions.
    • General Information Sessions for Tenured/Tenure-Track Faculty

    • General Information Session for Non Tenure-Track Faculty
      This year the Provost’s Office is also offering a separate session devoted to the promotion process for non-tenure track (NTT) faculty with professorial rank. Interested NTT faculty, department heads and RPT department and college administrators are encouraged to attend.  This session will be offered on Thursday, March 2 from 3 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. in Williams Hall, Room 2215.
  • The College of Education will host the 2017 Scholar-Practitioner Symposium on Wednesday, March 1 from 4:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation. The event, “Hot Topics in Educational Leadership, Policy and Human Development,” is a professional development initiative providing faculty, graduate students, and full-time professionals from NC State and other area universities with an opportunity to present their research to the scholarly community. Presentation topics are related to K-16 education including adult, workforce, and continuing professional education, educational leadership, education policy and higher education.
