Bio
Nicola Singletary is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Department of Food, Bioprocessing and Nutrition Sciences at North Carolina State University. She has over 20 years of experience in education, research, and clinical lactation work in diverse settings, and is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).
She teaches in the clinical lactation program at NC State University and has developed and taught in-person and online courses in human lactation covering topics in public health and clinical lactation management. She also teaches courses in child nutrition, global nutrition, and nutrition communication for diverse audiences. As part of her clinical and academic positions, she has designed and provided training for healthcare staff on breastfeeding support, mentored students interested in careers in clinical lactation, and served as a clinical preceptor for students working towards their IBCLC.
Her current research focuses on the interface between technology, nutrition education, and clinical breastfeeding support. Her work includes the science of teaching and learning of undergraduates who are new to lactation work and ways to support their learning through the use of immersive video and interactive teaching technology. She is also engaged in qualitative research on the role of community health workers in supporting breastfeeding in Pakistan.
