Bio

Dr. Levine, Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health, Department of Marine Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, College of Sciences.

Dr. Levine joined NC State in 1984. In his role as one of the College of Veterinary Medicine’s epidemiologists he provided instruction to veterinary students and graduate students for more than three decades. In 2016, he joined the NC State Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences to serve as their interim department head. After completing his administrative appointment in 2019, he remained in the department where he teaches classes focused on natural hazards (e.g. floods, tsunamis) and co-directs the department’s Climate Change and Society Graduate Program. Although his initial research work focused primarily on arthropod-borne diseases and in particular Lyme disease, his research efforts have also included studies on pre-harvest food safety, zoonoses, equine and companion animal health and the conservation of freshwater bivalves. Studies conducted by his laboratory, the Aquatic Epidemiology and Conservation Laboratory, currently focus on freshwater ecosystem health, environmental source tracking, and mitigating the effects of climate change on farmworkers and rural water resources. Dr. Levine is also active in support of early reading, math and science literacy and coordinates the Homework Haven a free-after school tutoring for k-6 grade children in Raleigh.
