Bio

Dr. Haddy Njie is a Teaching Associate Professor in International Studies, the founder and President of the Gambian Girl Power, and the 2024 North Carolina State University Equity for Women Faculty Award winner. She has researched and published on gender and education, gender and household resource management, and community social economy and money clubs in The Gambia.

Her non-profit, the Gambian Girl Power, advocates for gender-equitable education to expand access to schooling for girls, improve retention rates, and bridge the gender achievement gap. The curriculum centers on the five core values of teamwork, problem-solving, self-love, self-advocacy, and ambition. These values embody the club’s “I Can” slogan, conceived to build girls’ positive mental attitudes for tackling social and environmental challenges that limit their educational success and life chances. To mitigate climate vulnerabilities and impacts on lives and livelihoods, Gambian Girl Power has begun educating elementary and middle school girls on climate science, adaptation, and strategies for building climate resilience and healthy communities.

In addition to her faculty responsibilities at NCSU and engagements with Gambian Girl Power, Dr. Njie is a board member of Africa Yes, a non-profit in Durham, North Carolina, that partners with communities in Sierra Leone in key development areas such as health, economic empowerment, and education.
