Kennita Johnson, PhD is an assistant professor and Director of Community and Engagement in the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering at NC State and UNC. Her research focuses on using biomedical imaging, ultrasound and computed tomography (CT), to address health disparities. First, her lab examines diseases, conditions and environmental insults that disproportionately affect one population over another. Then, they develop imaging and image analysis protocols for the early detection of the condition or to quantitatively predict which conditions will progress to the worst outcomes. To address the disparity, the solutions must be affordable and accessible for the targeted population. Lastly, they determine how to clinically implement their solutions. So far, the lab has researched diabetic kidney disease, maternal and infant health and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease.
