Bio

Dr. Issmat I. Kassem is currently an assistant professor at the Center for Food Safety of the University of Georgia (USA). Dr. Kassem has more than 20 years of research and teaching experience across 3 continents and has published more than 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts and chapters in his field. His research interests include 1) the mechanisms that contribute to the survival and transmission of foodborne and waterborne bacterial pathogens in the host-environment continuum, 2) in-depth analysis of factors that impact the selection and emergence of antimicrobial resistance locally and globally, and 3) devising antibiotic-alternatives to control foodborne and waterborne pathogens. His overall objective is to develop antibiotic-independent and cost-effective approaches for reducing the burden of foodborne and waterborne bacterial pathogens and antimicrobial resistance on public health and the economy. Dr. Kassem is an advocate of coordinated global efforts and the adoption of the One Health ethos to combat infectious diseases and the emergence of antibiotic resistance, with emphasis on low- and middle-income countries.
