Bio

I am a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in One Health in the Department of Livestock and One Health, Institute of Infection, Veterinary & Ecological Sciences, University of Liverpool. I graduated with a veterinary degree from the University of Liverpool in 2005 and spent the initial years of my career volunteering for a veterinary non-profit organisation in Morocco, completing an equine veterinary internship and in equine primary care practice. I returned to the University of Liverpool in 2007 to study for a PhD focused on evaluating the efficacy of knowledge-transfer interventions for communicating animal health information to rural farmers in Ethiopia. In 2010, l joined a British non-profit organisation as Director of Veterinary Programs, where l was responsible for managing global veterinary programs aimed at improving the health and welfare of animals. Between 2015 and 2022, l was an Assistant Professor in Veterinary Global and Public Health in the College of Veterinary Medicine, North Carolina State University.

My research primarily focuses on food security and food safety challenges related to animal source foods (ASFs) in Ethiopia. I am interested in developing effective interventions to drive positive child nutritional outcomes through safe ASF consumption. I am the PI for a USAID funded project on: Improving smallholder poultry production and egg consumption in children under two in Ethiopia. I seek to further understand and mitigate potential risks associated with unsafe ASFs, and the linkages between animal ownership, ASF consumption, the gut microbiome, and its association with Environmental Enteric Dysfunction (EED).
