Bio

Sarah O’Flaherty is a Senior Research Scholar in the CRISPR Lab in the department of Food, Bioprocessing and Nutrition Sciences at NCSU. Sarah researches functional genomics, genetic engineering of beneficial microbes, probiotic-host interactions, and mucosal vaccine development using lactic acid bacteria. This includes collaborations with research groups at the CVM studying the bile salt hydrolases of lactobacilli and the development of vaccines for diseases in poultry.

Sarah obtained her PhD in Microbiology at the University College Cork in Ireland where her graduate research concerned the study of bacteriophage and lysins as potential anti-microbial agents against Staphylococcus aureus. Sarah has held various positions at North Carolina State University, including Research Scientist and Postdoctoral Research Associate. Sarah has also worked at the Boston Veterans Affairs Medical Center and the APC Microbiome, Ireland.
