Bio

Dr. Terri A. Long – Professor, Plant and Microbial Biology; Platform Director for Education and Workforce Development for the N.C. Plant Sciences Initiative.

Anemia induced by iron deficiency is one of the most prevalent nutritional disorders in the world. Most people obtain nutritional iron predominantly from plants. The Long Lab uses genetics, molecular biology, and systems biology to gain insight into molecular genetic mechanisms that control plant responses to iron deprivation. Ultimately, this information may lead to the generation of crops with increased nutritional content and increased yield when grown in poor soils. In her more recent role with the N.C. Plant Sciences Initiative, Dr. Long also focuses on facilitating inclusive educational and professional development programs that create and sustain career pathways to innovation in plant science.
