Administrator Updates

• Rich Bonanno, vice provost for Outreach and Engagement and associate dean and director of NC State Extension in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, will leave NC State in late August. He will become the executive director for the Association of Southern Region Extension Directors.
• Vice Provost for Budget and Business Operations Search: On-campus interviews for four finalists interviews are wrapping up this week, with a new vice provost to be announced in the coming weeks. More information on the search is available at go.ncsu.edu/vp-bbo-search.
• Several new department head appointments became effective on July 1:

From the Division for Academic and Student Affairs:

• A signature Wolfpack Welcome Week event, the Moonlight Howl and Run — taking place Thursday, August 22 at 9 p.m. — is a great way to actively get to know campus. Meet at the Memorial Belltower under the moonlight to kick off this 1.3-mile fun run. The race will end at Stafford Commons for a post-race party complete with music, snacks and photo ops with Mr. and Mrs. Wuf. All race-day information will be communicated through Instagram. Please follow @NCStateWellRec to stay up-to-date with the Moonlight Howl and Run. Registration closes at 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 21.
• NC State’s Packapalooza™ is a vibrant all-day block party and street festival that caps off Wolfpack Welcome Week on Saturday, Aug. 24, 2024 from 2 to 10 p.m., commencing the academic year with a bang. We are also looking for volunteers to sign-up for Packapalooza™. Please be advised: all volunteers are expected to be flexible with their schedules during the event. As a volunteer, you have the ability to indicate your availability. Keep in mind that it will take hundreds of people to help us execute this event.

We are also seeking Super Volunteers who will manage groups of eight to ten people to assist with the setup and kick-off of the event. You will meet with the planning committee before the event for training and to familiarize yourself with the footprint of the event. We are looking for people who are early risers with good leadership skills and who can commit to the entire time frame from 5:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. You will be provided with a t-shirt, light breakfast, lunch, and access to the VIP area for the headliner’s performance.

• From the team that has been bringing you the award-winning SPARK Summer Professional Development programs for the last five years comes our newest offering: The Paper Trail! The Paper Trail is an intensive, five-week asynchronous professional development program crafted to empower academics in maximizing the impact of their projects through comprehensive publication strategies. Throughout the duration of the program, participants will delve into every facet of the publication cycle, from the inception of a project to its dissemination across various channels.
• Interested faculty are invited to join the Retiring Conversations Group on Thursday, July 18, from 1-2 p.m. for a webinar presented by James Haygood. James is with Savant University Wealth Management and will be discussing Long-term Care and Alternatives for Protecting your Assets. They will meet by Zoom.

From the Genetics and Genomics Academy:

• We are happy to announce that the Genetics and Genomics Academy 3rd Annual Retreat will be held August 23, 2024 from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. in Duke Energy Hall in Hunt Library. This event will welcome new graduate students and new faculty, highlight the research of GGA laboratories and Research Interest Groups, and feature remarks from our new GGA Executive Director Jeff Yoder as well as previous director and keynote speaker Fred Gould.

From the Global One Health Academy:

• The Global One Health Academy is excited to announce the Participatory Sciences Graduate Certificate, developed in partnership with Citizen Science Campus. The Participatory Sciences Certificate trains graduate students to address pressing global issues through collaboration with the public on scientific research.
• The Global One Health Academy is excited to announce the undergraduate minor in Global One Health! Through this minor, students will employ interdisciplinary perspectives and systems thinking to key Global One Health issues including emerging infectious diseases, challenges to sustainable food and water sources, and climate change and related health disparities. • Many phishing scams impersonate people you know, like a professor, a colleague or even Chancellor Randy Woodson. These scams are becoming harder and harder to recognize — and falling for them puts the entire campus community at risk. In this video, Woodson shares three simple steps to help keep the Pack safe.
• To help NC State meet its Google storage quota, the Google Service Team will implement storage reduction on Sept. 3. Users should check for shared content that needs to be retained before this date.

From Innovation and Entrepreneurship:

• We’re announcing the 2024 Andrews Launch Accelerator Companies. The ALA 2024 cohort ranges from early idea-stage companies to those with rapidly scaling revenue. With expanded support from across NC State’s campus and within the community, we’ll welcome our largest and most diverse cohort yet! Surety Systems has provided generous support for two teams in the ALA 2024 cohort, Wilson College of Textiles is sponsoring a textile innovation team, and John R. Bratton provided support through his family’s foundation with a major gift to enhance and expand the NC State Acceleration Fund after observing the good work accomplished by his friend Chip Andrews and his work with supporting early stage founders across the university. • Innovation and Entrepreneurship is seeking a new member of our leadership team — a director of Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship — who will focus on social innovation and entrepreneurship education and commercialization using an interdisciplinary approach.

• Gabe Huntsman, a junior majoring in business administration with a concentration in finance and a minor in science communication, is the 2024 recipient of the John and Linda Leazar Award in Entrepreneurship. This award supports NC State students who have demonstrated initiative and a commitment to entrepreneurial excellence in support of their own personal ambitions as well as the support of NC State Innovation and Entrepreneurship. From the Institute for Emerging Issues:

• More than 130 digital inclusion experts and community leaders from 40 North Carolina counties gathered on June 4 at Blue Ridge Community College for the Institute for Emerging Issues’ first-ever Digital Opportunities: Growing Connections Across North Carolina conference. Learn more.
• The Institute for Emerging Issues is celebrating the completion of digital inclusion plans covering 24 counties and the Qualla Boundary in Western North Carolina.
• IEI’s Director of Community Initiatives Samantha Graham was honored as one of the Triangle Business Journal’s 40 Under 40, “rising stars in the local business world who have distinguished themselves in their companies, their communities and their industries – all before their 40th birthday.”
• IEI is excited to announce the five regional teams that will make up the Financial Resilience community cohort. Members of this cohort include representatives from five organizations that are working to increase household financial resilience locally, especially for communities with historically increased barriers to saving and debt management. This is IEI’s tenth cohort promoting community-level capacity building.

From Institutional Strategy and Analysis:

• University Data and Analytics (UDA), a new unit within Institutional Strategy and Analysis (ISA), was recently established in recognition of data and analytics as a critical university business function. The new unit will work collaboratively to lead the modernization of NC State’s data and analytics resources and capabilities and to improve the overall effectiveness and value of data and analytics at NC State. • Some information on the ISA website has moved. With the establishment of University Data and Analytics (UDA), ISA has moved the Factbook, Common Data Set, rankings and peer comparisons to a new area of its website. Visit Institutional Analytics for these and other institutional data resources that ISA maintains for the university community.
• The 2024 Incoming First Year and Transfer Student Surveys are now live and will be collecting responses until early September. These annual surveys capture invaluable insights into the experiences incoming students, including:
  • The journey through the application and admission process
  • Reasons for attending NC State
  • Interests and expectations regarding their undergraduate education

Eligible students will receive email invitations to participate shortly after attending their New Student Orientation session over the summer. As a token of appreciation for their time and input, participants who complete the survey by the September 4 deadline will be entered into a random drawing for a chance to win one of several gift cards. Results for past first year and transfer cohorts are available on the ISA survey website.

• The Shelton Leadership Center has announced a new cohort of Shelton Leadership Scholars. You can learn more about them here.
• The 2024 Shelton Leadership Forum — Multigenerational Teams: Building a Collaborative Culture — will be held Friday, Oct. 18 from 9 a.m.-noon.  The 2024 Forum will delve into the complexities and opportunities presented by multigenerational teams, offering a comprehensive exploration of strategies to cultivate a cohesive and collaborative work culture. Attendees will gain practical approaches to bridge generational gaps, encourage mutual understanding, and capitalize on the diverse strengths and talents within their teams for innovative organizational success and enhanced team effectiveness. 

From the NC State University Libraries:

• The Libraries is pleased to welcome its 2024-2027 Libraries Fellow, Katya Mueller. Mueller will join the Open Knowledge Center, and her fellowship initiative will be “Maturing the Libraries’ Data Management Planning Service” in the Research Facilitation Service. Mueller will be the Henry McDonald Tate Fellow for 2024-2025. Established by Hope Tate, former president of the Friends of the Libraries Board, this memorial endowment helps support the Libraries Fellows Program and serves as a tribute to her late husband, who was a graduate of NC State in Computer Science.
• What projects and people inspire you? Alumni Mitchell Moravec (BS ‘18, BA ‘18, MPA ‘20) has a ready answer, and he’s creating a Libraries endowment in order to tell you. Moravec’s donation creates the Rupert Nacoste Libraries Wolf Tales Endowment which will provide support for Wolf Tales—the Libraries’ story-collecting program to document and archive NC State’s history in the voices of those creating it.
