August 2026 Provost’s Corner

NC State Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Jim Pfaendtner

As the 2026-27 academic year begins, I am excited about NC State’s future and grateful to serve as executive vice chancellor and provost. Over the past 100 days, I have engaged with many across the university community, gaining a broader perspective on the strengths positioning us for continued success.

Guided by Chancellor Kevin Howell’s vision for NC State as the nation’s leading 21st-century land-grant university, we will advance an academic enterprise that delivers an exceptional student experience, drives impactful research and strengthens partnerships that extend our land-grant mission.

Higher education is evolving rapidly, creating new opportunities for how we teach, discover and engage. Our responsibility is not simply to keep pace with change, but to help shape it. Whether through emerging technologies, interdisciplinary collaboration or new partnerships, NC State is uniquely positioned to translate knowledge into solutions that improve lives and strengthen North Carolina.

That work depends on all of us. Every day, our faculty, staff and students demonstrate the creativity, curiosity and commitment that define this university. I know that together we will continue building on NC State’s remarkable foundation while preparing our students, our research enterprise and our university for the opportunities ahead.

Throughout the year, I encourage you to make time for your own well-being. NC State offers many opportunities to support your physical, mental and professional well-being, and I hope you’ll take advantage of them. Be sure to mark the Wellness Days on September 29 and February 16 on your calendar and syllabi.

I look forward to working with you as we continue advancing NC State’s mission and building on the momentum that makes this university such a special place.

Go Pack!

Until next time,
Jim Pfaendtner, Ph.D.
Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost
