NC State Packapalooza
  • NC State’s next Strategic Plan: The 2019-2020 academic year marks the end of The Pathway to the Future: NC State’s 2011-2020 Strategic Plan and creation of the next strategic plan is beginning. This process will be led out of the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, starting with a leadership retreat on September 3, with participants representing all of NC State.   • The Provost’s Office has recently hired Maria Almanza as the Director of External Faculty Awards and Recognition. This inaugural position was created to help support faculty as they pursue external awards. External awards include awards, fellowships, or honorary memberships that are awarded outside of NC State. All faculty who are interested in applying to an external award can contact the Director for help with any of the following:
    • Strategically identifying awards
    • Pre-writing, drafting, and editing application materials
    • Managing applications, nominations, and reference letters
    • Answering questions regarding awards and fellowships
  • Packapalooza is back Saturday, August 24 from 2-10 p.m. on Hillsborough Street. This festival kicking off the fall semester includes Pack Pride, Service, Play, Arts and Wolfpack zones, along with food vendors, games, prizes, music and more.   • The NC State Office of Undergraduate Admissions has announced two significant changes to the 2020 admissions process that will provide greater access to future applicants. Starting with the upcoming 2020 application season, NC State’s early action deadline will be November 1 for first-year applicants. Self-reported test scores will also be accepted for all domestic applicants.

Leadership Updates

  • In the College of Natural Resources, Myron Floyd recently began serving as interim dean and Michael Kanters began serving as the interim head of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management.
  • In the College of Sciences, Chris McGahan’s appointment as dean was extended and Heather Patisaul recently became the college’s new associate dean for research.
  • Interim Dean of the Graduate School Peter Harries will become dean of the Graduate School effective September 1, pending approval from NC State’s Board of Trustees.
  • In the Division of Academic and Student Affairs, Lisa Zapata has been appointed interim vice chancellor and Bret Smith has been appointed interim dean of University College following the departure of Mike Mullen.
  • Charles Maimone will be joining NC State as the next vice chancellor for finance and administration effective September 30, pending Board of Trustees approval.
  • Associate Vice Provost for Assessment and Accreditation Fashaad Crawford has been named vice provost for assessment and accreditation.

  • NC State DELTA is back this fall with new opportunities for you to learn how to effectively leverage NC State learning technologies to improve student success! New to our Fall Workshops 2019 is a series of facilitated opportunities so you can follow along with DELTA as we cover a few key teaching with technology topics.Visit go.ncsu.edu/deltaworkshops for a list of current offerings and to sign up for a few sessions!   • NC State DELTA also offers the LearnTech helpdesk for academic technologies. If your department would like a workshop offered for your faculty, or if you would like an individual consultation, please email the team at learntech@ncsu.edu. All workshops are free and open to faculty, staff and grad students.
  • Some of your colleagues in DELTA have submitted two PanelPicker proposals for SXSW EDU and need your help voting! PanelPicker allows the public to vote on the sessions they would like to see at SXSW EDU. Help bring NC State DELTA to Austin! Check out this article for more information and instructions on how to vote: https://delta.ncsu.edu/news/2019/07/26/vote-for-nc-state-deltas-sxsw-edu-proposals/. DELTA’s proposed sessions include Designing Educational Engagement with XR and Geolocation Technology in Place-Based Learning. You can only vote once for each session so we need everyone’s help! The deadline to vote is Friday, Aug. 23.

From the Office of Global Engagement:

  • The Office of Global Engagement is now accepting nominations for the 2019-20 Global Engagement Institute. The annual program provides professional development, support, and consultation for faculty and staff interested in developing research, scholarship or academic programs with an international focus. This year, the focus of the program is expanding collaborations through the University Global Partnership Network (UGPN). View details and this year’s call for nominations for the Global Engagement Institute. The deadline for nominations is September 27.
