Daniel Monek has been named the new associate vice provost for academic personnel and policy, effective April 7. He will assume the role from Laura Nelson, who is returning to NC State’s College of Veterinary Medicine as the director of clinical education. Senior Vice Provost for Faculty Excellence Kim Grainger made the announcement today.

“Dan’s attention to detail and knowledge of academic policymaking will be an asset in this position,” said Grainger. “I look forward to working with him to serve our faculty at NC State.”
As associate vice provost for academic personnel and policy, Monek will work with the Office for Faculty Excellence to ensure that specific policies, regulations, and rules related to faculty employment at NC State are consistent with the goals of the institution and are being implemented efficiently, fairly and appropriately.
This will include providing leadership for the post-tenure review reporting process for NC State, including consulting with colleges and departments on interpretations of the post-tenure review policy, creating and maintaining related resources for faculty and academic administrators, and collecting and reporting institutional data to the UNC System. He will also serve as the primary point of contact within the Provost’s Office for the implementation of regulations on instructor qualifications, as well as the development and maintenance of academic continuity plans for colleges and departments.
“Throughout my time at NC State, I have been honored to serve in a variety of roles in support of our outstanding faculty and administrators,” said Monek. ”I look forward to the opportunity to continue working with the dedicated academic professionals of the Office for Faculty Excellence to build on that work in this new role”
Monek has been a university administrator at NC State since 2016. He served for many years as a department head in the Division of Academic and Student Affairs. For the past two years, he has conducted policy analysis and updates with the Office for Faculty Excellence. This includes working to incorporate interdisciplinarity in faculty review processes throughout NC State’s colleges and units, defining promotion standards for professional faculty, and developing tools that deans and department heads can use to support initiatives within their academic units.
Monek has been a professor at NC State since 2016 and served as the head of the Department of Performing Arts and Technology until 2023. During this time, he helped make significant strides in the growth of the department, including significant improvements in facilities and educational infrastructure, curricular innovation, and a renewed focus on alumni giving.
Monek is the director of the North Carolina Master Chorale’s auditioned high school Youth Choir and serves each summer as a choral instructor for the NC Governor’s School program for gifted and talented high school students run by the state’s Department of Public Instruction. Prior to coming to North Carolina, he served for sixteen years as the chair of the Department of Music and director of Choral Activities at Marietta College in Ohio where he also developed and led the institution’s Vocal Pedagogy Certificate program.
He received his Ph.D. in music from Edinburgh University (Scotland) and holds degrees in music education and vocal performance from the University of South Florida. Monek has taught music in Florida’s public schools and was the founding artistic and musical director of the New Edinburgh Orchestra in Scotland. He has served in numerous state and regional leadership positions for the American Choral Directors Association and as a site evaluator for the National Association of Schools of Music, music’s accrediting body.
