2017 Common Reading Program

2017 Common Reading Program selection

Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates is NC State’s 2017 Common Reading Program selection. The book confronts the social construction of race and the role it has played in our nation’s past and present, while seamlessly interweaving a personal narrative that demonstrates how our collective history as a country can have personal implications for individuals in our society.

Incoming students will receive their copy of Between the World and Me at New Student Orientation. A study guide for students will be available in late June to assist in them in understanding Between the World and Me and provide questions to consider as they read. Faculty, staff and students are invited to learn more about the text and how it relates to students’ first-year experience at NC State’s convocation on Monday, Aug. 14 in Reynolds Coliseum.

To promote the goals of the Common Reading Program, the university has established a Common Reading Mini-Grant Program. This program provides funding to members of the campus community to develop and implement programs that engage first-year students with the Common Reading selection. Information on submitting a proposal will be available mid-summer.

In 2016, the Common Reading Program awarded grants, totaling $3,000, to four proposed programs across campus. Learn more about last year’s winners and get grant proposal ideas.

Follow the Twitter conversation on Between the World and Me at NC State by using the hashtag #OnePackOneBook. Resources for faculty and staff, including discussion guides and interviews with the author, are also available.
