Images can capture the imagination, and research images have the power to explain complex concepts, offer insights into the research process and draw viewers in to the power and beauty of science, mathematics and engineering.

Last year, the Graduate School, University Communications and the College of Sciences sponsored the first ever NC State Research Image Contest, open only to graduate students and postdoctoral researchers. This year, the contest has expanded to include faculty and staff as well, thanks to sponsorship by the university’s Office of Research, Innovation, and Economic Development (ORIED). Also new this year, photography and microscopy have been split into separate categories to encourage more images from all research disciplines.

Contestants can submit images in four categories:

All images should be original, well-executed and effective at communicating information to the audience. See below for more details.

Cash prizes are provided by the Graduate School and ORIED. In the graduate student/ postdoctoral division, prizes are $250 for first place and $100 for second place in each category. Prizes in the faculty/staff division are also $250 for first place and $100 for second place in each category.

This year, entries must be submitted online at https://ncsu.qualtrics.com//SE/?SID=SV_eS6a60JGpbk3toV. Submissions are due no later than June 15, 2017.

Individuals may submit multiple entries, but each entry must be submitted separately.

Winners will be announced Aug. 15, 2017. More information is available at go.ncsu.edu/image-contest. Anyone with questions about the contest can contact Matt Shipman at matt_shipman@ncsu.edu.

Need some inspiration? Check out the winning entries from last year’s contest. Winning images from the 2016 Research Image Contest will also be on display at the Hunt Library, starting Feb. 17.
