Turn educational innovation into tangible scholarship<\/strong>

The Office of Faculty Development invites you to apply for the 2021 Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Institute (SoTL), a program designed with busy faculty members in mind who would like to explore teaching as a form of scholarly work. The SoTL Institute provides NC State faculty with skills, funding, mentorship, and support to conduct research in teaching and learning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participants will learn about SoTL and discipline-based education research (DBER), as well as design and implement a research project to study teaching and learning in their course or courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The SoTL 2021 theme is Crafting Educational Innovation in Difficult Times<\/strong>. Let’s reflect on the hard lessons learned during this difficult year and turn them into innovative scholarship that can be published and shared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eligibility:<\/strong> Any full-time faculty member<\/strong> at NC State may apply to participate in this program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Purpose:<\/strong> The purpose of the SoTL Institute is to support the development of a SoTL or DBER project. In the year-long experience, faculty will develop research questions for educational research, design a study using quantitative and qualitative assessment techniques, and gather evidence that can be used to answer these questions. In this program, participants will receive guidance from experienced SoTL researchers to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Develop an educational research agenda<\/li>
  2. Lower barriers to presentation\/publication<\/li>
  3. Receive mentorship, funding, and support<\/li>
  4. Belong to an educational research community<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Program Dates:<\/strong> This is a 1-year commitment that begins with an intensive Virtual Institute held in mid-May. For this year, the dates are Monday, May 10, Wednesday, May 12 and Friday, May 14, 2021.There are 4 follow-up meetings in August 2021, October 2021, January 2022, and April 2022, all held on the last Monday of the month from 3:00-4:00 PM. Participants will present a poster with their findings at the 2022 Teaching and Learning Symposium held at the end of February 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Funding:<\/strong> Each participant is eligible for a mini-grant for up to $1,250 that can be used for conference travel or other allowed project-related expenses.
    Applications open Monday, March 1, 2021 and close at 11:59pm on Friday, April 9, 2021. Proposals to study topics related to the theme Crafting Educational Innovation in Difficult Times<\/strong> will be given priority in the selection process. If accepted, you must commit to attending all program sessions. Acceptance notifications will go out on Monday, April 19, 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Writing Wednesdays: Virtual Faculty Writing Retreats<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Do you have a writing task that you’ve been putting off? The Office of Faculty Development offers virtual writing retreats, Writing Wednesdays, designed to support you in getting it done!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Until we return to in-person meetings on campus, the OFD team has designed synchronous 2.5-hour mini-retreats using the Pomodoro method. Our next session will be held April 7.
