{"id":447,"date":"2011-07-14T13:01:40","date_gmt":"2011-07-14T17:01:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ofd.ncsu.edu\/?page_id=447"},"modified":"2025-07-29T20:59:17","modified_gmt":"2025-07-29T20:59:17","slug":"holladay-medal","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/provost.ncsu.edu\/ofe\/awards-and-honors\/holladay-medal\/","title":{"rendered":"Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal for Excellence"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nomination Deadline: Wed., Nov. 5, 2025<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/provost.ncsu.edu\/ofe\/awards-and-honors\/holladay-medal\/#overview\">Overview<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/provost.ncsu.edu\/ofe\/awards-and-honors\/holladay-medal\/#criteria-and-eligibility\">Criteria and&nbsp;Eligibility<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/provost.ncsu.edu\/ofe\/awards-and-honors\/holladay-medal\/#recognition-and-award\">Recognition and&nbsp;Award<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/provost.ncsu.edu\/ofe\/awards-and-honors\/holladay-medal\/#renomination\">Renomination<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/provost.ncsu.edu\/ofe\/awards-and-honors\/holladay-medal\/#nomination-and-submission-guidelines\">Nomination and Submission&nbsp;Guidelines<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/provost.ncsu.edu\/ofe\/awards-and-honors\/holladay-medal\/#administrative-advisory-committee\">Administrative Advisory&nbsp;Committee<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1jvvL9PXFd42kcO6ucJl24dP7-X6h303puCfR8EXe9U8\/edit#gid=1370211462\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Previous&nbsp;Recipients<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"overview\"><strong>Overview<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At its April 24, 1992 meeting, The Board of Trustees of North Carolina State University established a new award to honor faculty whose careers demonstrated a dedication to excellence. &nbsp;The award, known as the Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal for Excellence was named in honor of Alexander Quarles Holladay, NC&#160;State\u2019s first Professor of History and its first President.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Intended to be the highest faculty award at NC&#160;State, the Holladay Medal for Excellence recognizes members of the faculty whose careers have demonstrated outstanding achievement and sustained impact in research, teaching, or extension and engagement. &nbsp;The NC&#160;State Board of Trustees reviews nominations that are selected by its University Affairs Committee in consultation with the Holladay Medal for Excellence Nomination Committee and the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost. &nbsp;The Board of Trustees may then select from zero to five recipients in any given year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"criteria-and-eligibility\">Criteria and Eligibility<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To be considered for the Holladay Medal, the nominee must be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>full-time faculty<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>employed at NC&#160;State University at least ten years<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>faculty whose career demonstrates excellence, *high achievement, and sustained impact within the university and beyond its borders.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/policies.ncsu.edu\/policy\/pol-01-30-01\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NC&#160;State\u2019s Policy 01.30.1 Holladay Medal for Excellence<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"recognition-and-award\">Recognition and Award<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The recipient or recipients will be recognized and presented with an engraved medal and a framed certificate at the Celebration of Faculty Excellence (CFE).&nbsp; The NC&#160;State Memorial Belltower is lighted red in recognition of all honorees of the CFE.&nbsp; Recipients will also be recognized at spring Commencement and publicized in NC&#160;State media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"renomination\">Renomination<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A nomination may be resubmitted for the next award cycle if the nominee has not been selected as a recipient of this award. Renominations are not automatic. They must be resubmitted with updates that reflect the current year of nomination, confirmation of continued support from the writers of support letters, and any information regarding awards, accolades, projects, publications, or other activities completed after the submission of last year\u2019s nominations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"nomination-and-submissions-guidelines\">Nomination and Submission Guidelines<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nomination Deadline for the 2025\u20132026 Academic Year: Wed., Nov. 5, 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nomination Package Submission Process: Required Contents<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Narrative describing career excellence in teaching, research, and\/or outreach and service, and the impact these achievements have had on the university.&nbsp;<strong>Limit&nbsp;5 pages<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Letters of support from<strong>&nbsp;at least&nbsp;<\/strong>three (3) references knowledgeable of the nominee\u2019s achievements and able to render expert evaluation. At least one such letter should be from someone not currently a member of the NC&#160;State University faculty, administration, staff, or student body.&nbsp;<strong>Limit<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;2 pages for each letter<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Copies or samples of the nominee\u2019s work, reviews, newspaper or magazine articles, or other supporting documentation of the nominee\u2019s outstanding achievements may be submitted.&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong>Limit<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;20 pages<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CV or Dossier.&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong>Limit<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;25 pages<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One jpg file of a color photograph suitable for publication by the UNC System.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A&nbsp;<strong>one-page<\/strong>&nbsp;summary document describing the nominee\u2019s commitment to career excellence and outstanding achievement in teaching, research, or extension and engagement, including awards and honors. When creating this document, please adhere to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/provost.ncsu.edu\/ofe\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/10\/BOT_Guidelines_Holladay_Medal_Summary_Description.pdf\">guidelines<\/a>&nbsp;for the review packet for the Board of Trustees.<br><em>Note: Since this summary will be included in the&nbsp;<strong>Board of Trustees\u2019 Review Packet<\/strong>, please make sure it is written in a concise, readable, and well thought out manner which can be understood by non-faculty reviewers. &nbsp;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Required nominee information.
