This year, NC&nbsp;State honored 29 faculty members during the&nbsp;2026 Celebration of Faculty Excellence&nbsp;on May 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ncst-accordion ncst-accordion\"><div class=\"accordion\" id=\"ncst-accordion-0\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-ncst-accordion-item ncst-accordion-item panel\"><a class=\"accordion-item__header collapsed\" href=\"#ncst-accordion-item-0-2\" id=\"ncst-accordion-item-heading-2\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#ncst-accordion-item-0-2\" aria-controls=\"ncst-accordion-item-0-2\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"accordion-item__expansion-indicator\"><span class=\"ncst-plus-minus-toggle\"><\/span><\/span><h2 class=\"accordion-item__label h5\">Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal for Excellence<\/h2><\/a><div class=\"collapse panel-collapse accordion-item__content-container \" id=\"ncst-accordion-item-0-2\" aria-labelledby=\"ncst-accordion-item-heading-2\" data-parent=\"#ncst-accordion-0\"><div class=\"accordion-item__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/provost.ncsu.edu\/ofe\/awards-and-honors\/holladay-medal\/\">Holladay Medal<\/a> is the highest university award in recognition of faculty excellence. Futrell Distinguished Professor in Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering, Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professor and a University Faculty Scholar. He is internationally recognized for integrating microbiology and engineering to solve pressing problems in wastewater treatment, waste-to-energy and global sanitation. Dr. de los Reyes innovative and interdisciplinary work has advanced both fundamental science and real-world practice \u2014 improving public health, protecting the environment and training the next generation of engineers and scientists. His research has redefined our understanding of microbial communities in engineered and natural systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cbe.ncsu.edu\/people\/hall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carol K. Clark, Jr. Distinguished University Professor in Engineering in the Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering. She is widely regarded in scientific and engineering circles as an intellectual leader and a pioneer who paves the way for others. Dr. Hall\u2019s early use of statistical and molecular thermodynamics to solve engineering problems \u2014 long before most chemical engineers recognized its value \u2014 played a pivotal role in modernizing applied chemical engineering thermodynamics research. Beyond her research, Dr. Hall chaired the Honors Council from 1992-94, and as part of her responsibilities, she helped establish the Holladay Medal at the request of the NC&#160;State Board of Trustees.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ncst-accordion-item ncst-accordion-item panel\"><a class=\"accordion-item__header collapsed\" href=\"#ncst-accordion-item-0-3\" id=\"ncst-accordion-item-heading-3\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#ncst-accordion-item-0-3\" aria-controls=\"ncst-accordion-item-0-3\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"accordion-item__expansion-indicator\"><span class=\"ncst-plus-minus-toggle\"><\/span><\/span><h2 class=\"accordion-item__label h5\">UNC Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching<\/h2><\/a><div class=\"collapse panel-collapse accordion-item__content-container \" id=\"ncst-accordion-item-0-3\" aria-labelledby=\"ncst-accordion-item-heading-3\" data-parent=\"#ncst-accordion-0\"><div class=\"accordion-item__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northcarolina.edu\/news\/unc-board-of-governors-selects-winners-of-2024-teaching-awards\/\">UNC Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching<\/a> is the most prestigious teaching award given annually to one faculty member from each campus in the UNC System. As leader of the Equine Primary Care (EPC) rotation, Dr. Sheats developed the CVM\u2019s first formal distributive clinical education program for educating veterinary students in primary education that serves as a model for other veterinary schools developing similar distributive courses. According to her students, Dr. Sheats is the kind of teacher every student needs, consistently offering her full attention while providing encouragement, honest feedback, and meaningful opportunities for both personal and professional growth. Dr. Sheats is a skilled mentor, educator, leader, and innovator at the CVM and in the profession and she exemplifies the qualities of a UNC Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching recipient.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ncst-accordion-item ncst-accordion-item panel\"><a class=\"accordion-item__header collapsed\" href=\"#ncst-accordion-item-0-4\" id=\"ncst-accordion-item-heading-4\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#ncst-accordion-item-0-4\" aria-controls=\"ncst-accordion-item-0-4\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"accordion-item__expansion-indicator\"><span class=\"ncst-plus-minus-toggle\"><\/span><\/span><h2 class=\"accordion-item__label h5\">The American Academy of Arts and Sciences<\/h2><\/a><div class=\"collapse panel-collapse accordion-item__content-container \" id=\"ncst-accordion-item-0-4\" aria-labelledby=\"ncst-accordion-item-heading-4\" data-parent=\"#ncst-accordion-0\"><div class=\"accordion-item__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amacad.org\/\">American Academy of Arts &amp; Sciences<\/a> serves the nation as a champion of scholarship, civil dialogue, and useful knowledge. As one of the country\u2019s oldest learned societies and independent policy research centers, the Academy convenes leaders from the academic, business, and government sectors to respond to the challenges facing the nation and the world. A compound found in bananas and wild tomato plants is the basis for the new spray, which protects wearers from mosquitoes for up to eight hours and ticks for four hours. This CAREER project reinvents hemp as a high-performance, sustainable textile fiber by advancing processing and structure-property understanding. She has led research and trained almost 30 students and postdocs for more than a decade. She has taught plant physiology to over 400 students and mentored dozens of K-12 students through outreach programs that focus on minoritized students. Dr. Long has led many workshops, seminars, and has published articles about the importance of mentoring minoritized scientists.
