NC State provides a range of methods for the evaluation of teaching. Classeval is NC State’s formal, required, end-of-course evaluation system. In addition, faculty are required to have periodic peer reviews of their teaching. However, these teaching evaluation methods are often summative and the results often cannot be used until the course is taught again. Because of this, you may want to consider using a Midsemester evaluation in your courses.

CLASSEVAL

At the end of each term, students are given the opportunity to provide feedback to faculty members via ClassEval. A standing Evaluation of Teaching Committee assures that practices required by the Evaluation of Teaching Regulation are appropriate and accurately reflect the needs of faculty and students. The Office for Faculty Excellence, in conjunction with the Evaluation of Teaching Committee, has developed a document with easy tips for improving response rates on your end-of-semester evaluations.

Midsemester Evaluations

Midsemester evaluations offer instructors the ability to discover how they might improve their course prior to its conclusion. This type of evaluation is managed and controlled by the instructor, with results seen only by the instructor. Midsemester evaluation focuses on improvement and can often result in ideas for improvements that can be implemented immediately. Midsemester evaluations can be distributed in person, on paper or be distributed electronically by software such as Google forms or Qualtrics.

Reflecting on Your Teaching

Developing a reflective narrative on teaching is a critical component of the Reappointment, Promotion, and Tenure (RPT) process at NC State, as well as for teaching awards and annual reviews. The goal is to move beyond simply listing data to telling a story of continuous improvement. The Office for Faculty Excellence has created a guide to help you Develop a Written Teaching Reflection.
