{"id":12365,"date":"2022-12-12T01:52:52","date_gmt":"2022-12-12T01:52:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/provost.ncsu.edu\/ofe\/?page_id=12365"},"modified":"2024-04-12T18:58:09","modified_gmt":"2024-04-12T18:58:09","slug":"get-started","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/provost.ncsu.edu\/ofe\/keep-teaching\/get-started\/","title":{"rendered":"Get Started"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some of the first steps to take when faced with a disruption to delivering your course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ncst-accordion ncst-accordion\"><div class=\"accordion\" id=\"ncst-accordion-0\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-ncst-accordion-item ncst-accordion-item panel\"><a class=\"accordion-item__header collapsed\" href=\"#ncst-accordion-item-0-0\" id=\"ncst-accordion-item-heading-0\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#ncst-accordion-item-0-0\" aria-controls=\"ncst-accordion-item-0-0\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"accordion-item__expansion-indicator\"><span class=\"ncst-plus-minus-toggle\"><\/span><\/span><h2 class=\"accordion-item__label h5\"><strong>Get the information and hardware you need<\/strong><\/h2><\/a><div class=\"collapse panel-collapse accordion-item__content-container \" id=\"ncst-accordion-item-0-0\" aria-labelledby=\"ncst-accordion-item-heading-0\" data-parent=\"#ncst-accordion-0\"><div class=\"accordion-item__content\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Campus closures or emergencies are reported through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsu.edu\/emergency-information\/\">Wolfalert<\/a> and the university <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsu.edu\/\">homepage<\/a>. The Adverse Weather and Emergency Status phone number is (919) 513-8888.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check with academic departmental leaders for guidelines about their expectations for course delivery.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The NC&#160;State University Libraries offers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lib.ncsu.edu\/devices\">Technology Lending<\/a> services with a variety of devices available.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Information about instructional technology at NC&#160;State can be found via <a href=\"https:\/\/delta.ncsu.edu\/learning-technology\/\">DELTA LearnTech<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ncst-accordion-item ncst-accordion-item panel\"><a class=\"accordion-item__header collapsed\" href=\"#ncst-accordion-item-0-1\" id=\"ncst-accordion-item-heading-1\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#ncst-accordion-item-0-1\" aria-controls=\"ncst-accordion-item-0-1\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"accordion-item__expansion-indicator\"><span class=\"ncst-plus-minus-toggle\"><\/span><\/span><h2 class=\"accordion-item__label h5\"><strong>Communicate with your students right away<\/strong><\/h2><\/a><div class=\"collapse panel-collapse accordion-item__content-container \" id=\"ncst-accordion-item-0-1\" aria-labelledby=\"ncst-accordion-item-heading-1\" data-parent=\"#ncst-accordion-0\"><div class=\"accordion-item__content\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Even if you don\u2019t have a comprehensive plan in place, communicate with your students as soon as possible, informing them that changes are coming and what your expectations are for checking email and using tools such as Moodle (NC&#160;State\u2019s learning management system) and Zoom (NC&#160;State\u2019s web conferencing tool).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inform your students that the <a href=\"http:\/\/help.ncsu.edu\/\">NC&#160;State Help Desk<\/a> (help.ncsu.edu, 919-515-4357\/HELP) is available if they need support using technologies in their courses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students will follow your lead. In your communications, convey calm and assurance that everything will be okay with the course, which will help students remain positive and on-task.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ncst-accordion-item ncst-accordion-item panel\"><a class=\"accordion-item__header collapsed\" href=\"#ncst-accordion-item-0-2\" id=\"ncst-accordion-item-heading-2\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#ncst-accordion-item-0-2\" aria-controls=\"ncst-accordion-item-0-2\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"accordion-item__expansion-indicator\"><span class=\"ncst-plus-minus-toggle\"><\/span><\/span><h2 class=\"accordion-item__label h5\"><strong>Adjust your course plans<\/strong><\/h2><\/a><div class=\"collapse panel-collapse accordion-item__content-container \" id=\"ncst-accordion-item-0-2\" aria-labelledby=\"ncst-accordion-item-heading-2\" data-parent=\"#ncst-accordion-0\"><div class=\"accordion-item__content\">\n<p>Build in some flexibility, just in case the situation takes longer to resolve than you expect. We\u2019ve created a <a href=\"https:\/\/provost.ncsu.edu\/ofe\/keep-teaching\/create-a-plan\/\">series of questions and a template<\/a> that may be helpful for developing your academic continuity plans and sharing with departmental leaders and colleagues. Initial questions to consider include:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>What are my goals during this time?<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What learning outcomes can I realistically accomplish during this time period?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can I maintain the original syllabus and schedule?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Will I ask students to keep up with the originally planned readings and assignments, or do I just want to keep them engaged with the course content however I can?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>What are the new priorities and schedule?\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Will I continue providing lectures?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Should I structure new opportunities for discussion or group work?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Will I collect assignments?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What activities are better rescheduled?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What can or must be done online?&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Which of my policies and expectations must temporarily change?<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Will my students be able to meet expectations for participation, communication and deadlines?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What if they are dealing with illness, lacking power or internet connections, or needing to care for family members?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How will I handle requests for extensions or accommodations equitably?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>What new tools or approaches are needed?<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What tools and workflows are already familiar to me and my students?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are there colleagues in my department, university or discipline with resources or creative approaches I could use?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is it absolutely necessary to roll out a new tool or approach? When mental and emotional energies are already taxed, little energy and attention will remain for learning new things.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What can I reasonably master and introduce? Keep it simple. Don\u2019t expect to implement a fully online course that would normally take 18 months of planning. Use only the tools you need to be effective.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ncst-accordion-item ncst-accordion-item panel\"><a class=\"accordion-item__header collapsed\" href=\"#ncst-accordion-item-0-3\" id=\"ncst-accordion-item-heading-3\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#ncst-accordion-item-0-3\" aria-controls=\"ncst-accordion-item-0-3\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"accordion-item__expansion-indicator\"><span class=\"ncst-plus-minus-toggle\"><\/span><\/span><h2 class=\"accordion-item__label h5\"><strong>Communicate to students again with more details<\/strong><\/h2><\/a><div class=\"collapse panel-collapse accordion-item__content-container \" id=\"ncst-accordion-item-0-3\" aria-labelledby=\"ncst-accordion-item-heading-3\" data-parent=\"#ncst-accordion-0\"><div class=\"accordion-item__content\">\n<p>As you know more about how your course plans will be adjusted, reach out to students and provide those details. Set student expectations. They will have many questions, so consider how you want to manage that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Show care, compassion and kindness to students. Underserved and marginalized students may experience disproportionate stressors including lack of resources or the need for accessible formats. Your care and support for all students may make all the difference in their motivation, persistence and ultimate success in your course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What key changes about the class can I share at this time?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How can they contact me (email, online office hours, etc.)?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How soon can they expect a reply from me?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ncst-accordion-item ncst-accordion-item panel\"><a class=\"accordion-item__header collapsed\" href=\"#ncst-accordion-item-0-4\" id=\"ncst-accordion-item-heading-4\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#ncst-accordion-item-0-4\" aria-controls=\"ncst-accordion-item-0-4\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"accordion-item__expansion-indicator\"><span class=\"ncst-plus-minus-toggle\"><\/span><\/span><h2 class=\"accordion-item__label h5\"><strong>Stay prepared when there\u2019s no disruption<\/strong><\/h2><\/a><div class=\"collapse panel-collapse accordion-item__content-container \" id=\"ncst-accordion-item-0-4\" aria-labelledby=\"ncst-accordion-item-heading-4\" data-parent=\"#ncst-accordion-0\"><div class=\"accordion-item__content\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Consider relevant statements you may want to include in your syllabi and review with students each semester, such as:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reserving your right to modify a syllabus when necessary and guaranteeing communication to the class in writing about any such changes when they occur.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inclement weather, emergency preparedness or campus closure information.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your expectations and procedures should classes be cancelled.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider introducing online learning tools and practices early each semester.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Engage regularly with departmental, university and disciplinary colleagues about teaching innovations that work well online.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider a plan for course continuity should you be unable to teach your course for any reason.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>For more information and suggestions, contact the <a href=\"mailto:faculty-excellence@ncsu.edu\">Office for Faculty Excellence<\/a> or DELTA\u2019s faculty help desk at <a href=\"mailto:learntech@ncsu.edu\">learntech@ncsu.edu<\/a> or (919) 513-7094.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here are some of the first steps to take when faced with a disruption to delivering your course.
