From Recruitment to Retirement and Beyond
How the Office for Faculty Excellence Supports the Full Faculty Lifecycle at NC State
The trajectory of an academic career is long, dynamic, and deeply personal. From the moment a prospective faculty member first considers NC State as a professional home to the day they transition into emeritus status, and the years of continued engagement that follow, each stage of that journey carries its own challenges, milestones, and opportunities for growth. At NC State, the Office for Faculty Excellence (OFE), housed within the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, exists to ensure that no faculty member walks that path alone.

OFE is not a single-purpose office. It is a career-long partner, offering a continuum of programs, resources, and strategic support designed to meet faculty wherever they are in their professional lives. What follows is an overview of that continuum, an invitation to explore what is available, and a reminder that the investment NC State makes in its faculty is both intentional and enduring.
It Starts Before Day One
Great universities are built by great faculty, and building a great faculty begins with recruitment. OFE collaborates with colleges, departments, and university leadership to support empowered and strategic hiring practices that attract top talent to NC State. Through resources such as the Building Future Faculty (BFF) program, the university creates early pipelines for emerging scholars, preparing them for thriving careers in academia and continuing to inspire their efforts to create supportive communities among scholars, practitioners, and the community.
Welcoming and Orienting New Faculty
The transition into a new faculty role is one of the most consequential moments in an academic’s career. OFE coordinates the New Faculty Orientation experience, ensuring that incoming colleagues are not simply handed a parking pass and a syllabus template but are meaningfully introduced to the institutional resources, governance structures, and collegial networks that will shape their success. Orientation is designed to be more than informational; it is relational, connecting new members of our Wolfpack faculty with peers, mentors, and campus leaders from the start.
Supporting Early-Career and Pre-Tenure Faculty
The pre-tenure years are often the most demanding period of a faculty member’s career. The pressure to establish a research agenda, develop as a teacher, navigate service expectations, and build a professional reputation can be overwhelming, especially without a clear guide. OFE provides programming specifically tailored to early-career faculty, including workshops on the reappointment, promotion, and tenure (RPT) process, grant writing support, teaching enhancement opportunities, and peer mentoring communities.
These resources are not generic. They are grounded in NC State’s specific policies, expectations, and culture, giving junior faculty the contextual knowledge they need to navigate their path with confidence rather than guesswork.
Reinvigorating Mid-Career Faculty
After tenure, a different set of challenges emerges for faculty members. Mid-career faculty often find themselves at a crossroads: do they pursue full professor rank, shift toward administration, deepen their research program or explore entirely new scholarly directions? The Office for Faculty Excellence (OFE) recognizes that this stage requires its own kind of support. Through mid-career development programming, leadership programs and opportunities for scholarly renewal, the office helps associate professors avoid the stagnation that too often characterizes the post-tenure years.
This is also a stage where faculty increasingly take on mentoring responsibilities for junior colleagues. OFE supports that transition by offering training and frameworks for effective mentorship, ensuring the culture of faculty support becomes self-sustaining across generations.
Engaging Senior Faculty and Emerging Leaders
Senior faculty are the institutional memory and intellectual backbone of the university. OFE values their continued engagement through programs that honor their expertise while inviting them into new roles, whether as mentors, leaders of interdisciplinary initiatives, or contributors to university governance and strategic planning. For faculty exploring leadership pathways, OFE and the broader Provost’s Office offer development opportunities that prepare them for academic leadership pathways without requiring them to abandon their scholarly identities.
Retirement Transitions and Emeritus Engagement
Retirement does not always mean departure. NC State’s emeritus faculty remain valued members of the university community, and OFE works to ensure that the transition from active service to emeritus status is thoughtful, dignified and rich with continued opportunity. Whether through guest lecturing, advising graduate students, participating in research collaborations, or simply maintaining a connection to the campus community, emeritus faculty continue to contribute to NC State’s mission in meaningful ways.
OFE supports retirement planning conversations, helps faculty navigate the logistical and emotional dimensions of this transition, and advocates for policies that keep emeritus colleagues connected and engaged.
A Broader Ecosystem of Support
OFE does not work in isolation. The office is part of a broader ecosystem within the Provost’s Office portfolio that includes academic affairs, institutional research, community engagement and interdisciplinary initiatives. Faculty benefit from this integrated approach because their needs rarely fit into a single category. A faculty member preparing for tenure may also be developing a community-engaged research agenda, mentoring undergraduates and considering a leadership role in their professional association, all at the same time. The Provost’s Office units work in concert to support that complexity.
Additionally, OFE partners with the Speakers and Lectures Committee, which provides funding to bring distinguished scholars and thought leaders to campus, enriching the intellectual environment for faculty and students alike. The committee’s recent transition to an RFP model has expanded access to these resources, allowing more departments and programs to host events that advance their scholarly communities.
An Invitation
If you are a faculty member at NC State and you have not yet engaged with OFE, consider this your invitation. Whether you are in your first semester or your fortieth year, whether you are navigating the tenure process or planning your retirement, there is something here for you. OFE exists because NC State believes that supporting faculty is not a one-time event but a sustained commitment, one that begins before you arrive and continues long after your formal career concludes.
We are here for every stage of the journey. We hope you will let us walk alongside you.
