May 2020 Provost’s Corner

Dear faculty and staff,

While this semester was not one anyone could have anticipated, good things are still happening at NC State. Your commitment to excellence means that our students were still able to learn online and make progress toward their degrees. Now many of these students can call themselves proud Wolfpack alumni.

The Class of 2020 includes graduates with a combined 112 associate, 4,180 bachelor’s, 1,606 master’s, 195 doctoral and 100 doctor of veterinary medicine degrees, for a total of 6,192 degrees. These graduates have persevered through trying circumstances, and with your help, are ready to face a promising future.

The people of NC State truly make a difference in our students’ lives, which is why we were saddened to learn of the passing of former College of Design Dean Emeritus Marvin Malecha on May 5. Dean Malecha embodied all that made our university great, from his engaging personality, care for students, faculty and staff, and love for our campus community. He will be greatly missed.

Dean Malecha had a heart for serving our campus, as do our outstanding faculty and staff. I want to thank each one of you for your tireless efforts over the past several months to help each other and our students in any way possible. That includes your gifts to the Student Emergency Fund, and everything you have done for academic continuity.

We don’t know exactly what the rest of the year will look like at NC State, but we continue to plan to move forward in a way that keeps our health and safety top of mind. Please see the recent message from me and Vice Chancellor Maimone for the latest update.

Remember, we are here for each other, and I encourage you to continue to reach out and stay connected to your colleagues. I look forward to seeing how we keep engaging with one another over the coming months.

Until next time,
Warwick Arden
Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost
